Apple's iPad 2: Event March 2; Rumors swirl until then

By | February 22, 2011, 11:26am PST

Summary: Apple’s next-gen iPad will be reportedly announced March 2 and in the meantime the rumor mill is kicking into overdrive.

Apple’s next-gen iPad will be reportedly announced March 2 and in the meantime the rumor mill is kicking into overdrive.

BoomTown’s Kara Swisher reports that Apple will hold its iPad 2 launch event March 2. That report goes a long way toward dispelling rumors swirling around Apple today.

Simply put, today has been nothing but Apple iPad rumors. Earlier in the day, Apple shares took a hit on rumors that the iPad and iPhone 5 would be delayed. These reports were credited to two analysts at Yuanta Securities, which covers Hon Hai Precision. According to these rumors, production bottlenecks would delay the iPad.

Those rumors, which appear to be untrue, were later squashed by the report of a March 2 event.

Add it up and the next-gen iPad appears to be set to hit its timelines—set by the media and rumors of course.

Now those items are taken care of we can all begin speculating on the iPad 2 features and whether Android tablets can compete.

Another Home Run For Apple
Ron Burgundy 22nd Feb 2011
iPad 2 will build on the smashing success of the first iPad.

I can't wait for the launch, hopefully Steve will be there to announce it and quell all the health fears.

Bravo Apple, you continue to amaze and astound.

Not really.

Bravo Apple, you continue to amaze and astound

Not really, not for those that understand what they're looking at, IMHO.
disagree is anything but humble.
@John Zern

I know what I'm looking at:

Something that Microsoft, Android, RIM and HP still can't compete with.

Need I say more?

I wonder if Ballmer is going to laugh at this too.

Many people are "amazed and astounded" at a magic trick, yet if I know how it's done, then it's really not amazing or astounding to me.

Yet I wouldn't insult someone who is amazed and astounded at the trick, as the trick is doing exactly what it's designed to do.

Apple shareholder (thank's to my father) as long as they keep the shares up, I'm happy.

But I also understand where the iPad v2 won't be anything amazingly far and beyond that of the 1st gen iPad.

But it will still do well as many of those with v1 will buy v2 and that's fine, as we'll all be happy then.
@John Zern But it will still do well as many of those with v1 will buy v2 and that's fine, as we'll all be happy then.

I wonder if that means I'll be able to pick up a used v1 for my daughter dirt cheap after Mar 1st. Meh.. probably not.

And Ford created the automobile, yay for them but I rather have a BMW. I'm sure the model T had its loyal fanboys too. Its called 'progress' and I hate to burst your bubble, but Apple doesn't own it.
@Ron Burgundy

They'll add a front facing camera, make it a couple of ounces lighter and charge 30% more. They continue to amaze and astound indeed.
@gvass1339 Umm...no....they won't.

They'll have the same pricing as the iPhone does, you'll pay the same price for the new iPad as you did the old one a year ago. Apple isn't that stupid.

What they are adding:

Front and rear cameras
More internal RAM (hopefully 1GB)
Don't know about more flash RAM...64GB is still a good size
Anti glare screen
Dual core processors
Lighter
Thinner

Try again.

Mike Cox was witty and original. Cyberslammer, er, Ron Burgundy is neither, just a troll.
@SonofaSailor

True. I meant in the sense that he is the ultimate fan.

Everybody I know who wants an iPad was waiting for version 2 to make the jump, myself included.

The fact that your life revolves around a product launch, and whether Steve Jobs will be there

or...

that a company like Apple amazes and astounds you.

the iPad 2 is going to be even more magical then the first one! I have the Xfinity app and I never use the remote anymore, I just bring the iPad downstairs, plug it into the charger, sync it up with the network, and then use it to change the channels on my cable box!

What could be easier? The iPad 2 is gonna rock!

Do I go with the iPad which lacks the features I really want/need or a an over priced Xoom that has the features but kicks me in in the $$$$. Decisions, decsions.... I think I'll wait till the dust settles and reason comes to both sides.

@RMTeaser Agreed. I have a Nook Color running Android Honeycomb and it is awesome for $250 but I really want to replace my personal notebook. After using Honeycomb for a couple of weeks, I may be willing to go as high as $500 for a tablet with GPS, cameras, etc because I think it will have enough to leave my laptop behind (I also have a work laptop for development and heavy lifting if needed). I think people are going to be really impressed with Honeycomb. It is going to fly on this next generation of tablets. I am sure Apple will deliver a great experience as usual but I won't buy an iPad until it behaves much more like a PC which means web browsing with flash, real mutitasking etc.

I think the LG G-Slate may be a contender but price is going to be the deciding factor.

It will be just as unamazing and not magical as the first iPad. Boring.
@Loverock Davidson

Agreed, I like Microsoft's tablets much better. Can't wait till 2012 and be able to buy one.
@Bookmark71

You mean those clunky overpriiced things that require a stylus?
@Monkeypox,
Last week I were using a Lenovo x201 and I worked with it without an stylus. BTW, the stylus is excellent for note taking, something the iPad lacks. The stylus I have seen for the iPad are too thick compared with the stylus included with the Lenovo. IMO, having an stylus is one of the advantages of W7 tablets vs the iPad.
And it *still* won't be able to make a fracking phone call.
The iPad 2 will however remain a very expensive plaything. Nice and cute, but of little practical use (for me).
awesome
