Apple's iPad represents 90 percent of all tablets shipped; Amazon owns e-readers

By | January 18, 2011, 5:38am PST

Summary: Apple’s iPad dominates the tablet market and accounts for 90 percent of all tablets sold in the third quarter, according to IDC data. Meanwhile, Amazon has a commanding 41.5 percent share of the e-reader market.

Apple’s iPad dominates the tablet market and accounts for 90 percent of all tablets sold in the third quarter, according to IDC data. Meanwhile, Amazon has a commanding 41.5 percent share of the e-reader market.

IDC reports that Apple’s iPad drove tablet demand almost exclusively in the third quarter. Global tablet shipments in the third quarter checked in at 4.8 million units in the third quarter, up from 3.3 million in the second quarter.

In addition, e-reader shipments were 2.7 million units in the third quarter, up 40 percent from a year ago. Price cuts helped spur e-reader sales. The U.S. market accounts for almost 75 percent of the global e-reader market.

For 2010, IDC estimates that 17 million tablets will ship. In 2011, the tablet tally will be about 44.6 million. While Apple has a massive lead, the ramp of Android based tablets are expected to surge. In many respects, IDC’s third quarter data is just a preview. The Samsung Galaxy Tab was the first high-end Android tablet to launch and will garner some fourth quarter sales. But the onslaught of Android tablets is yet to come.

As for the e-reader market, IDC notes some interesting items. Pandigital, which makes e-readers with e-paper and LCD screens was No. 2 in market share. Barnes & Noble was No. 3 and Sony, which features e-readers with higher prices was a distant No. 4.

Apple has a great marketing team and many people do not realize that there are alternatives that can give them the same functionality. Owning an Apple computer or an Apple iGadget is viewed by quite a few people as some sort of status symbol. tipy

I doubt that.

IMHO, whether good or bad, Honeycomb (Android in general) just doesn't have the "cool" factor that the iPad has, and to be totally honest, people are buying tablets on what they perceive as cool, and maybe not on what turns out actually be the better choice.

@AllKnowingAllSeeing Cool eh? The only people I know of that are more concerned about the "cool" factor and "fashion" and "style" than the people who use these words as excuses for the success of the iPad and iPhone are teenage girls.

Bold economister. Very bold. Dozens of entries into the tablet world within the next 12 months and you've really stepped out on a limb predicting that they will have an impact. D'oh.

I would have to agree that the "cool" factor plays at least some role in Apple's sales on their gadgets. Apple has a great marketing team and many people do not realize that there are alternatives that can give them the same functionality. Owning an Apple computer or an Apple iGadget is viewed by quite a few people as some sort of status symbol. Here is an example: I have a teacher that got an iPad over Christmas and now walks everywhere with it making sure that it is visible. Even got a case that would keep the Apple logo exposed and her reasoning is (and I quote) "I want people to know that it is an iPad and not some cheap knock-off". Same goes for their computers which I have heard many say they want to buy just because they are cute and pretty or think because that they are more expensive it will be a status boost for them. Now it may not be everybody and the iPad is a good device but the "cool" factor does exist. If it didn't I would have been snubbed by so many for having a less expensive Android based tablet.

I think my point was this is not really newsworthy. If you are essentially the only player in a market, a 90% share is not surprising.

Given the nature of your post, you obviously have trouble understanding simple concepts.

With the iPad 2 on its way with rumored "retina" display and other cool features, I see Apple easily dominating this space again in 2011. It all comes down to understanding the general consumer's needs, and catering to it. It's not about the number of features that can be crammed halfheartedly into a device but how easy/well these features work that matters (haven't we learned anything from the iPod?). The company that gets to the hearts and minds, emotions of the general consumer commands this market, and Apple gets this.

Yes and No
AllKnowingAllSeeing 18th Jan 2011
@dave95. Getting to market something people want, or getting people to take what you have are 2 different things, yet have the same finacial results in the end. It's in the sales pitch.

Look at the many "high end" A/V companies over the years: they managed to make a living getting people to pay 300 dollars for 20 dollars worth of cable, or spending thousands on speakers with a frequency far beyond what humans can hear.

Sure they gave people what they wanted, but they also did so by making people believe they needed it.
@AllKnowingAllSeeing

I don't get your argument. Apple is not forcing consumers to purchase an iPad, they could have easily buy a Tab, or an Archos clunker, or a color Nook, or choose from a list of failed Windows Tablet PCs still hanging around. Consumers are gobbling up iPads for a good reason, not because they have no choice and therefore forced to buy from Apple. Have you seen the typical reaction of someone using an iPad for the first time? Most people I witness playing with an iPad for the first time want to buy one, now. They could easily walk away if they felt it was not worth the cost, but that's not happening.

Apple understands the value of emotional connection with consumers, and how important that is for the success and longevity of its product in the consumer space. Let the others continue to pitch spec sheets.

dave95, I think what he's trying to say
John Zern 18th Jan 2011
(and this is just my opinion) that the "emotional connection" is based more on what they get people to perceive what the item is, as opposed to what it really is.

The speaker wire thing I can follow: People get emotionally attached to their enetertainment system, and will buy Monster Cable for hundreds over cost as they are convinced that it's the bast, even though the specs show otherwise.
Yet people are gobbling up cables like these for a good reason.

In other words, Apple could spray paint the Galaxy Tab white, and convince people its their second generation tablet, and get people to buy it over the Galaxy Tab.

In other words, you have to determine what that reason is.
@John Zern

"(and this is just my opinion) that the "emotional connection" is based more on what they get people to perceive what the item is, as opposed to what it really is......."

And what is the iPad really then, paperweight? The problem with this argument especially when relating to the iPad is that, everyone in the industry today agrees that the iPad is the best overall offering, period. And as for as cost goes, the iPad with its 10" screen and over 10 hour battery life is priced aggressively when compared to other competitors. So not sure how this relates to a monster cable pulling a fast one on consumers.

But i've heard the same arguments before with the iPods. Gen consumers really don't know any better, it's just marketing, they're just sheeps, they don't know that there's "better" products out there with better "specs, specs, specs". It's that false thinking that all consumers are the same, and are therefore looking for the same functionality/features in the products they buy. And of corse it's always the kitchen sink proponents who just look at a spec sheets and nothing else when comparing.

@dave95. Sort of like net books where they were the hot commodity for a while but then the market got saturated and they faded into the background.

To me, all tablets end up having a fairly narrow range of use cases so I have to wonder if by this time next year, most people who want one will already have one.
@cornpie

With the netbook market, there were no where to go but down. Meaning they started off as cheap second rate devices and sold well because they were cheap, in a down economy. There was not much value in netbooks other than second rate devices you can easily throw in your backpack. I don't know much people that thought netbooks were great. Hence the drying up.

This is not the case with tablets like the iPad imo. If we are to look at the functionality from apps alone, then there will be infinite use case for this device in the future. Who knows what great app will pop up next from creative developers. Take a look at all the different industries where the iPad is currently being used (health, enterprise, airline, hotel, auto, financial...) A good sign that this device and other like devices are here to stay for a long while.
And I still haven't seen anyone walking around with an iPad. Please let this tablet fad go away.
@Loverock Davidson Get off the boards you classless fool...between you and SonofaSailor you both have zero tact when it comes to people's health.

... because Microsoft have tried to create a market for "tablet PCs" for over a decade and have failed miserably every time. They failed then and they will continue to fail until they realize tablets aren't a "form factor" of PC.
@Loverock Davidson
You should strongly consider changing your handle to "Loverock Dinosaur".
@Loverock Davidson
I ride the local bus to work and see at least a couple of people daily using them... I also see the kindle a lot..
@Hasam1991

Well, the difference is you actually leave the house.

@Loverock Davidson reasons for that is, and i'm guessing here, that you, along with a really high percentage of the human population, don't have x-ray vision.
until we can see in all the purses and briefcases and the like my guess is we simply will not be able to see all the ipads out there.

I DEMAND that Apple offer me a choice of OS on the iPad and a choice of browser should I choose iOS.

Cue the double standards...
@NonZealot *Yawn*

We don't care anymore....and neither does Apple.

Bye bye loser.

Oh, you have an iPhone and a Macbook...

Cue the double standards.
@Ron Burgundy

Glad you can admit that Apple Doesn't care. Apple always has been selfish in what they do. Listening to Steve Jobs speak on such things about why Apple does things a certain way should be a clue on that. When an arrogant man runs a company you will get arrogant products. Some people latch onto Apple products like battered wives latch onto abusive husbands. It is almost like Stockholm Syndrome.
@bobiroc

I have 5 Windows 7 machines, an XBox 360, an iPhone, and an iPad....

So how am I latched onto Apple products if the majority of the technology in my house is Microsoft?

Cue the stupid response.

So you have an iPhone and an iPad. You just proved my point. Since Apple does not make a game console the Xbox 360 is irrelevant and the full functional computer is also irrelevant as we are talking about tablets and other gadgets.

Who's stupid now? Go back to drinking your scotch Ron Burgundy.
@Ron Burgundy

He claims to own an iPhone and a Macbook. If you've read his posts, he makes many claims, a large number of which are provably false. Why would this claim be true?

Cue the double standards...

It's the NonZealot drinking game. Everybody take a shot.
@RationalGuy
you have to take a shot!

Is that why Apple zealots always appear so ignorant and stupid? Is it just that they are always hammered?
@NonZealot The same should be said for Microsoft Zealots, they run around with phones sold by little pink fuzzy monsters and baying purple thingies on commercials and expect everyone to think that it's cool to be on an acid trip while trying to do business.

Windows Zealots are like six-month olds and retards, flash something shiny in front of them and they squeal with pleasure and want it, no matter how useless it is.

Wrong zealots

@NonZealot

It's the Linux and Open Source lunatics who are always griping about Microsoft monopolies.
I don't know. I'm a consumer and I want a 16x9 display, HDMI out, true HD playback and a USB and SD card slot. Apple may know what the consumer wants, but that doesn't necessarily mean they will give it to you.
Apple has a great marketing team and many people do not realize that there are alternatives that can give them the same functionality. Owning an Apple computer or an Apple iGadget is viewed by quite a few people as some sort of status symbol. tipy
