AT&T on Thursday said it will launch a hotspot app that will be available with its HTC Inspire 4G. The AT&T Mobile Hotspot will be available Feb. 13 for $20 a month and a 2GB allotment.

If bundled with the AT&T Data Pro plan, you get 4GB a month for $45. That 4GB allotment applies to collective use from all devices. If you go over the AT&T cap it's an extra $10 per gigabyte.

The move is a likely precursor to adding Wi-Fi hotspot capability to AT&T's iPhone. For now, Verizon's iPhone has the exclusive on mobile hotspot functionality.

AT&T added that it will bring its tethering plan in line with its hotspot service.

Add it up and AT&T is positioning itself to add its hotspot plan to its iPhone.

Another reason to jailbreak. AT&T continues to rip the customer off at every turn.

I suppose next AT&T is going to start charging its UVerse Internet customers per machine to hook up to their home network since it's all sharing the same data pipe.

@Ron Burgundy Agreed. I'm just waiting on the untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 4 on iOS 4.2.1

@stevejg61 I hope they hurry up and add this functionality to WP7 so I can use my HTC HD7 for tethering.

I agree with many of you guys--data is data, and if you paid for 2GB you should be able to use it on the handset or tethered.

But comparatively, it's a good deal.

On Verizon the tethering option is also $20 but it only comes with 2GB, after which you incur overage charges.

But with AT&T, adding tethering for the same $20 gives you 2GB in addition to the 2GB offered in the data plan--meaning you get double the data that Verizon offers.
