Design and engineering software provider Autodesk is pushing out the next wave of its cloud solutions with a new "alternative."

Autodesk PLM 360 is a cloud-based, project lifecycle management (thus, PLM) solution designed to better enable companies to manage product information and processes to continuously improve the products they manufacture.

Autodesk reps cited a recent stat published by global research firm IDC, which estimated that the PLM software market will grow to $20.5 billion by 2015.

Thus, Autodesk is getting in at the ground floor quickly with hopes of "shaking up the very small population of legacy PLM solution providers" with new cloud-based products being released at a "fraction of the cost" made available from competitors.

Besides the budget-friendly angle, the other advertised alternative to Autodesk PLM 360 is that it is boasted to be the "first cloud-based PLM solution focused on business applications beyond engineering and bill of material management."

Other aspects include an always-on and easier-to-configure interface that can be customized to customer needs and product lifecycles.

For example, users can create and customize their own apps with drag-and-drop functionality, and the platform comes with dozens of pre-installed apps already.
