Logic and statistics
Obviously it is best to represent your data in way which is directly based on predicate logic; in other words the relational model.
Supposed performance problems with RDBMSs will be overcome by a combination of Moore's law, cheaper memory and more sophisticated implementations.
The so-called "big data" technologies like Hadoop are a return to pre-relational methods that have been shown to be too unreliable and inflexible both in theory and practice. Maybe the hope is, if your data is bigger enough, nobody will know it is wrong.
