Browser bug or did Yahoo! just acquire Technorati?

Summary: Either I just encountered a very strange browser bug, or Yahoo has just acquired Technorati. Just moments ago, while viewing the Technorati search results for Between the Lines,  I clicked through to this link about Dan Farber's interview with Dave Winer.

Either I just encountered a very strange browser bug, or Yahoo has just acquired Technorati. Just moments ago, while viewing the Technorati search results for Between the Lines,  I clicked through to this link about Dan Farber's interview with Dave Winer.  But when I hit the back button, I got an apology that was clearly generated by Yahoo!'s servers telling me that the page couldn't be found on Yahoo!'s servers.  The tab's title in Firefox (inserted below) also showed the Technorati logo along with the text "Yahoo! - 404 Not Found." I was not able to repeat the error.  Is this some crazy browser bug.  Or, did I miss the big news?

Update: Earlier this year (January), Mike Arrington asked When will Yahoo acquire Technorati.

Second Update: Here's a link to the complete screen shot.

Here's betting that the power of bugs to make news exceeds the facts of the matter.

In other words, don't believe it.

  • I say Browser Bug

I heard Dave Sifry speak just two days ago, and while Yahoo was also there, I didn't detect enough hedging to justify suspicion of anything up their sleeves.

Then again, maybe that's exactly what they WANT us to believe.

Then again, my FAVICON.ICO files are frequently getting mixed up in my bookmarks and browser toolbars.

    My vote is browser bug.

    • agree

i'd agree that this is a bug. i've also seen this kind of behaviour happening with my browser. infact, my slashdot link icon is infact a gmail mail icon!!

      dunno how that happened!

  • Unlikely

Wouldn't it be weird for Yahoo to move Technorati's stuff onto its servers even before it's announced a deal? That seems weirder to me than whatever browser weirdness may have caused the anomaly you spotted.

Also, I saw Sifry and Hirschberg hanging around the Syndicate conference in NYC just a couple of days ago, very much not locked in a lawyer's office hammering out the details of a deal.

(Disclosure: I'm on Technorati's board of advisors, but this isn't something they'd tell us about ahead of time. I haven't heard a peep either way.)

(Further disclosure: I'm hardly ever right. Especially in public.)
