Chatroulette: Site goes dark, but promises next version

Summary: Chatroulette has disappeared temporarily, promises to return today.

Chatroulette, the webcam powered Web site that allowed users to engage in random video chat with total strangers, has gone dark.

The site offered no details about what happened to service, which has been mocked by everyone from Jon Stewart to the South Park boys for its reputation for randomly finding men online who were, um, engaged in acts of self-pleasure.

A message on the site simply says: “The experiment #1 is over now. Thanks for participating. Renewed and updated version of the website will be launched today.”

I can only assume that by today, the company means Monday. But as I write this, the site is still down.

Meanwhile, TechCrunch is reporting, unconfirmed, that Napster founder Shawn Fanning has broken ties with the company and is no longer advising founder Andrey Ternovskiy.
