Yankee Group divides the security market into three broad components: threat mitigation, command and control, and managed security services.  Respectively, Cisco, Symantec and VeriSign currently lead each of these categories, which make up a market expected to generate $12.9 billion in revenue this year, according to the analyst firm. A research note (reg. req.) provides the following important, albeit, run-of-the-mill security recommendations:

  • Know your network. Classify values of assets and applications running on the network. Focus security processes and solutions on the network assets that are most valuable to the company.
  • Architect an integrated layered defense strategy. Each layer focuses on key strengths and works in tandem with adjacent layers. Enterprises can take advantage of best-of-breed products for each layer while allowing flexibility to secure changes in network requirements.
  • Challenge managed services vendors to make your teams better. Transfer best practices from experienced MSSPs to your IT, network management and security teams to keep core security competency in-house.
