The war of words between Craigslist and South Carolina Attorney General Harry McMaster is escalating. In this round, Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster wants an apology for McMaster's political showboating and failure to fully consider "the implications of your accusations."

In a fine post (Techmeme), Buckmaster calls McMaster's bluff. McMaster said over the weekend that "we have no alternative but to move forward with criminal investigation and potential prosecution.”

McMaster's statement came after Craigslist revamped its adult entertainment listings. Enter Buckmaster's demand for an apology.

Buckmaster argues that if McMaster is going to pursue Craigslist it should chase all companies that offer adult entertainment ads.

Many prominent companies, including AT&T, Microsoft, and Village Voice Media, not to mention major newspapers and other upstanding South Carolina businesses feature more “adult services” ads than does craigslist, some of a very graphic nature. For a small sampling, look (careful NSFW) here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here.

Have you fully considered the implications of your accusations against craigslist? What’s a crime for craigslist is clearly a crime for any company. Are you really prepared to condemn the executives of each of the mainstream companies linked above, and all the others that feature such ads, as criminals?

It's a good argument. But there's no glory in chasing those larger companies. Instead, McMaster will continue his Craigslist crusade. It's all about the politics and McMaster wants to earn points for a governor race.

Buckmaster concludes:

We’re willing to accept our share of criticism, but wrongfully accusing  craigslist of criminal misconduct is simply beyond the pale. We would very much appreciate an apology at your very earliest convenience.

Buckmaster may be waiting for a while.

  • Harry McMaster is a trojan horse

He is manipulated from behind the scenes by a few liberal pupeteers to make all conservatives look like nuts and out of touch with America.

    • ???

"manipulated from behind the scenes by a few liberal pupeteers to make all conservatives look like nuts and out of touch with America"?

The same is true for liberals who are manipulated by conservatives to seem out of touch with America.

The point is, the very nature of media today concentrates on the extremes (left and right) in order to capture eyeballs. It's safe to say that America is well within the bell curve of normal. It's those at the extreme ends, both left and right, who are out of touch.

    • No... he IS a nut.

...doing this for political gain... he wants to be governor.

God help us if he manages it.

    • No you idiot!

It's that secret Chinese ray they are pointing a the USofA. It makes the Liberals be more liberal and propose legislation that's bringing our beloved country to ruin. Fortunately those diabolical Chinese didn't count on the Republican's super sense of Patriotism. It blocks the nefarious ray from influencing them. Thank God for Republicans.

    • Easy!

Making "conservatives" look nuts and out of touch is easy. Do nothing.

Isn't that correct ? There's a halo over your heads....you don't need facts, figures, or common sense. it all comes natural to you !

  • I suspect another motivation behind this crusade.

$50 says that McMaster is just upset that no one answered his personal ad.

McMaster is saying it all in the name of politics and just showboating. If he is serious let him condemn all of the adult services and advertising in SC, otherwise he should withdraw his statements and offer a public apology. These kind of politics make me sick and McMaster is one of the worst, give it 3 years and some savvy reporter will did a few skeletons out of his closet show us all what a real sick man he is.

    Apology? Bull.

Buckmaster should apologize to us for his willingness to profit from sexual misconduct. The fact that others are doing it, too, doesn't make it right. Isn't that what we tell our kids? I'm willing to tell it to adults, as well.

    • Buckmaster should apologize

what sexual misconduct? just because it's not your cup of tea doesn't make it wrong. willful acts between consenting adults are nobodies business but there own. If you don't like the ads, don't look!

Another republican right wing attempt to eliminate freedom from Americas list of desirable traits. They've tried to eliminate free speech before. Remember, George Bush said, "There ought to be limits to free speech". But, free speech is good for America. It allows all Democrats and Republicans (especially) to open their mouths and insert their feet, which is quite a trick for the Repubs as they first need to pull their heads out of their bowels.

Craigslist's Buckmaster sounds like one of my adolescents after they get caught doing something terrible. All the other kids are doing it. How stupid! Its a shame such a useful service has such a seeded side to it.

    • Well said, indeed.

My mom would always ask us kids when we used that excuse...."well, if all the other kids were jumping off a cliff, you'd do that too?"

It's truly a shame that a useful, legit web business has to include "adult services".

  • McCarthyism?

Seems to me McMaster is touching into the area of McCarthyism. Go to this wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McCarthyism) & read & decide for yourself. It may not be strictly McCarthyism, but the similarities are there - McMaster is trying to make a name for himself in order to advance politically.
