Among the TechCrunch 40 presentations today, Cubic Telecom was among the most interesting. The company unveiled a “global” phone that eliminates expensive, international roaming charges. "All global calls become local calls,” said company CEO and co-founder Pat Phelan, which is great if you travel widely or call family or business partners around the globe.

Cubic Mobile is a dual-band GSM/Wi-Fi phone that includes, MAXroam, a "universal" SIM that supposedly offers the best country-to-country phone rates. User receive a single number but can create up to 50 local numbers, which are forwarded to the Cubic Mobile or a MAXroam-enabled device.

VoIP calls are free within the Cubic network. A basic model will retail for $135 and a Windows Mobile version is priced at $219. Both will be available October 1, according to the company, and the SIM card work with almost any phone (no Blackberry).
