Dell, Apple, Oracle lead life sciences IT buying parade

Dell is the top hardware dog in the life sciences industry, but Apple has surged in the standings, according to an IDC survey.

IDC surveys more than 100 life sciences companies to gauge spending for the year ahead. In the hardware category, 45 percent of life sciences companies said that they intended to buy from Dell in the next 12 months. Dell has been top dog for the last five years.

However, 30 percent of life sciences companies said they planned to buy from Apple. Cisco, HP, Intel, EMC and IBM round out the survey.

In software, 25 percent of respondents said they would spend money with Oracle. Apple, SAP and SAS also saw survey scores improve.

Accenture was the top life sciences service outfit with 10 percent of respondents planning to use the company, according to IDC. IBM had nearly 9 percent and Cognizant garnered more than 5 percent, said IDC.
