Deloitte highlights 10 trends to elevate IT in next two years

Deloitte lists its predictions for the top 10 trends for the elevation of IT in digital business, classifying them as either disruptors or enablers.

At the end of 2011, Deloitte published its predictions for the top 10 tech trends of 2012, most of which fell along the lines of social, cloud, and mobile.

Today, the consulting firm is publishing its third annual Tech Trends report, which really doesn't stray too far from Deloitte's picks in December.

However, this time Deloitte's researchers have split up trends more specific to the evolution of IT, expected to have the most impact over businesses throughout the next 18 to 24 months, into two categories: "disruptors" and "enablers."

While they both sound a bit sketchy, the categories are really defined by the trends they encompass. For example, some proliferating disruptions include gamification and the integration of social media in business. Enablers involve digital identities, big data, and geospatial visualization.

It should also be noted that Deloitte defines disruptors as something "that can create sustainable positive disruption in IT capabilities, business operations and sometimes even business models." Thus, disruptions really don't have to be bad things -- so long as you are mindful of the opportunities they present before dismissing them as simply deterrents from work.

Deloitte Consulting's deputy chief technology officer, Bill Briggs, warned in the report not to dismiss IT tech trends as just passing fads:

Forward-thinking organizations should consider developing an explicit strategy in each of the areas outlined in our report – even if that strategy is to wait-and-see. We encourage organizations to step up – now – and take advantage of these digital forces. No business should get caught unaware or unprepared.
