Do teenagers hate Facebook?

By | August 3, 2010, 2:00am PDT

At the Summit at Stanford, sponsored by AlwaysOn & STVP, AlwaysOn founder Tony Perkins talks to “You Are Not a Gadget” author Jaron Lanier about Facebook, and why teenagers may start shunning the social-media platform.

I shouldn't be so critical, but I have a hard time taking the word of a fat fairy with dreadlocks as gospel when it comes to Facebook. I spend a lot of time on Facebook, and people love it. The reason they moved to Facebook from MySpace is because of all of the crap people could program into their page that annoyed the hell out of other users, and this guy is suggesting that adding code is what Facebook users want/need. I just don't buy it.

Exactly. I remember when Lanier was relevant.
Facebook and twitter are both things for loosers. people who have no life and think being on facebook and twitter is the cool thing to do. I still have a hard time believing anyone uses those services unless your a company doing promotiing but for everyday use you have to be a predeator or brain damaged to post on thos things. Myspace had a purpose and still does for music promotion but social media apps and sites are way past thier time to go away.

@Fletchguy

Uh, most of the people I know that use Facebook do so to keep in touch with their extended family members. And most of the people I know that use Twitter are artists who use it to network with each other.

Your assessment is myopic at best.

@grassdogstudio After seeing Fletchguy's spelling of "looser", "your", and "predeator", I'll put $10 down that he has no clue what the word "myopic" means.

Just looking at this opening shot on the video, before anyone uttered a peep was, WHO ARE these three toads and what makes them think they know anything about what teenagers like? And then the audio confirmed it.

@WAMUSIC Are you kidding me!? Do you not see the fat guy's dreadlocks? What about that totally rad shirt the old man in the middle is wearing. Clearly these are individuals with their finger on the pulse of the teenage world.

I don't much care.

What steams me is these silly videos masquerading as communication. I have about 15 minutes each evening for ZDnet, and that pretty much rules out a night at the movies watching talking heads spit out their ideas. Ever since Gutenberg's great invention, reading has remained the fastest means to acquire knowledge. So why don't you drop the fluffy videos? After all, most of your readers are known to be at least semi-literate.

@nikacat agreed - or at least provide a transcript so I have some way of knowing what's happening without the whole hassle of playing the video

Bah.

Teens are by far the largest users, and while that may not last (few trends in the teen world ever do,) it is far from obsolete and 'hate' is inappropriate.

Most of what is said on social network sites is drivel of interest only within the circle to which it is posted, and then little is of interest even an hour later.

I do know of people both older and young who spend incredible amounts of time on such sites, but then people spend incredible amounts of time watching TV too.

Radio was going to newspapers.
TV was going to kill both radio and newspapers.
The Internet was going to make newspapers, radio, tv, and the telephone all obsolete.

Seldom do things work that way. Until recently, we had huans living in every form of xociety we ever invented, from hunting and gathering to complete urban detachment from the liiving world.

It's our fallback plan for when new ideas fail, we always have a group which knows how to use the previous social design.
