Egnyte brings life to old hardware with VMWare offering

By | August 30, 2010, 5:01am PDT

Egnyte, a startup focused in the cloud file server space, is giving businesses a tool to bring some life back to old hardware while stepping up its efforts in virtualization and cloud computing.

As part of the VMWorld show this week, Egnyte is announcing today its Enterprise Local Cloud tool on VMWare, a move that further builds on its hybrid strategy for file server storage.

Through a software layer on a virtual machine, the old hardware becomes part of the local storage - which runs at LAN speeds and makes the data available offline - as well as the cloud-based storage, which allows for remote and mobile access.

Late last year, the company released a local cloud networked attached storage, a move that expanded the hybrid move from direct attached storage to networked attached storage.

Last summer, it raised $6 million in Series A funding from Polaris Venture Partners and Maples Investments.
