EMC on Tuesday hooked up its Isilon network attached storage gear to Hadoop in an effort to play the big data trend.
The company launched its EMC Isilon scale-out NAS with the combined with its Greenplum HD appliance will link together to combine storage, analytics and Hadoop.
With the move, EMC is another big hardware player connecting to Hadoop, which can analyze streams of unstructured data. Oracle launched a big data appliance and other established players are hooking into Hadoop.
In a nutshell, the Isilon scale-out NAS gear natively plugs into the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) protocol. EMC’s aim is to boost enterprise adoption of Hadoop. Why? Big data implementations typically mean a lot of storage gear.
EMC’s big selling point to CIOs is that they won’t have to cobble together open source components and hardware to scale out a Hadoop environment. EMC is looking to get a jump as Hadoop goes corporate.
