Gmail for iOS reappears after show-stopper bug

By | November 17, 2011, 1:58am PST

Summary: Two weeks after Google’s fumbled launch of its Gmail iOS application, it’s back in the Apple App Store, with a number of new features, also.

Less than two weeks ago, Google published its latest iPhone offering to the Apple App Store: its long awaited Gmail application.

Within an hour of it going live, Google prematurely pulled the application from the store after many had complained that it was simply usable. Google later discovered a notification bug blocked access to the application.

But now it’s back.

On Wednesday afternoon, the search giant said that it had, “fixed the bug and notifications are now working, and the app is back in the App Store”.

Google did not reaffirm its apology, nor did the search giant spend too much time eating humble pie as the Gmail team’s comments continued to assert that the bug was not only fixed, but additional features were implemented.

The application now includes push notifications and sounds, inbox search, auto-complete for email addresses, as well as the ability to upload photos using the new attachment feature.

We’re just getting started with the Gmail app for iOS and will be iterating rapidly to bring you more features, including all the ones listed above plus many more”, Google product manager Matthew Izatt said in a November 16th company blog posting.

On November 2nd, the company tweeted an apology to its Gmail application users, who had taken to the social network to complain that the product was barely functional.

We have pulled the app to fix the problem. Sorry we messed up”, the tweet said.

The company attracted a heap of criticism for what came as a string of events that arguably made November 2011 one of the worst months in Google’s history.

Users must uninstall the current application if it remains on their device, to then upgrade to the new, refreshed version, available in the Apple App Store.

Instead of "...simply usable."

I think you intended to write:

"...simply unusable.
