Google: 500,000 Android devices activated each day

Summary: More than 500,000 Android devices are activated each day worldwide, Google Android chief Andy Rubin said.

The Android Army marches on.

Google Android chief Andy Rubin said through his Twitter account this morning that more than 500,000 Android devices are activated each day worldwide. Week over week, that's growth at a rate of 4.4 percent, he said.

My CNET colleague Don Reisinger notes that it was only a month ago that Google announced a 400,000-devices-per-day figure, up from 300,000 per day in December.

It's astounding growth, but the question is whether Google can control the beast. Android handsets are widely available, inexpensive to implement and offer the basic smartphone experience as we've come to know it in recent years: touchscreen, fast processor, multimedia and so forth.

It's the special sauce that fueled Android's staggering growth in the U.S. and is what continues to do so abroad, where smartphone adoption figures are beginning to mirror those seen in the early days in North America and Europe.

But there remain concerns about Google's ability to keep its various ducks in a row as rivals such as Microsoft and HP begin to execute on their mobile plans.

Still, in Q1 2011, Google and Apple were the only two companies to show growth in the industry-leading U.S. market, with 36.4 percent and 26.0 percent, respectively. (Microsoft held just 6.7 percent of its home market; HP just 2.6 percent.) Which goes to show that being a first-mover -- regardless of whether the product is ready to go to market -- matters.

Can the other companies stem Google's tide? I think so, if they focus on winning specific parts of the market where Google is stretched too thin. And we have yet to see how Nokia's eventual adoption of Microsoft Windows Phone 7 will play out in the global market.

    Fearlessly uninformed, inarticulate, flame-baiting opinion pieces: the 'special sauce' which threatens to asphyxiate the few intelligent, creative voices in zdnet during that site's rezoning as a tawdry subdivision of Content Farmville.

      @Justa Notherguy if you're going to call me names, compadre, you're going to have to ground them in something.

  • So...

    Why is Rubin happy about this? Google gives the software away for free... if anyone should be tweeting how many devices are sold it should be HTC, LG, Samsung and Moto...

      @Hasam1991 ...because each of those devices carries Google services that are NOT free.

      • Well, some that are...

        @andrew.nusca but which are paid for by advertisers. :)

      @Hasam1991 With 500K new devices a day that they can harvest all the info they can to sell to advertisers I am not surprised he is happy.

      @RonanSail

      Windows dominated by courting the largest number of developers over to the platform (developers, developers, developers). Having the largest selection of software applications for consumers in stores. And with their insistence of having every new shipping PC run the latest OS, they developed a truly strong and "unified" platform/ecosystem.

      This is not the case with Android, which if I was Google I would be concern. 3.5 years later and countless devices on all different carriers and yet the only success thing they can show is a slightly larger market share than Apple with their 2 phones.

  • be clearer about Android DEVICES and SMARTPHONES

    first you write 500k android DEVICES<br><br>then "Google and Apple were the only two companies to show growth in the industry-leading U.S. market, with 36.4 percent and 26.0 percent, respectively. '<br><br>but that' just SMARTPHONES<br><br>500k should be compared with iOS DEVICES (iPod touch and iPad)<br><br>also the smartphone numbers are for US only. In other parts of the world where iPhone is on multiple carriers like Europe and Canada iPhone is much larger than android (in Canada it's triple android)

    • RE: Google: 500,000 Android devices activated each day

      @Davewrite Your point is a bit invalid when you consider how big of a flop Android tablets are. Pretty much the only thing that sells in high volumes with Android in it is a smartphone.

      • RE: Google: 500,000 Android devices activated each day

        @Aerowind So we should only include device categories that Android does well? If you want to compare devices running one OS against another you have to include all devices running those OSs, not just the markets that do well for one.

    • YEAH!!! Davewrite!! YEAH!!!

      @Davewrite
      I know that as a HUGE Apple fan exactly like you, I HATE seeing numbers that might for a second suggest that Apple isn't #1 in every way possible!! All numbers that suggest Apple isn't #1 need to be sliced, diced, and then explained away. YEAH!!

        @woulddie4apple Non Zealot, didn't you just admit the other day that you dislike apple, and are only writing replies like this, because in your opinion, the apple lovers post the same thing everyday?

        Can't anyone say anything positive about apple without you having an attack?

        You know what I mean, each to their own, or what ever works for you, you use. I remember when your responses use to be well thought out intelligent answers.

        But now, or as of late, in the end why do you and others have to go over the edge, if someone prefers to use one platform or another?

      @Davewrite

      The article was about Android growth. There was a passing reference to Apple and you feel the need to challenge the ratio between Apple and Android.

      Get a grip. No one is telling you not to buy Apple if it pleases you. It pleases me to buy an Android tablet and I am very happy with it. As other players come to the party, I wouldn't be surprised to see other choices I would consider.

      BTW, I have actually used iPad, Android 2.2 and 3 and Playbook and made my decision based on which worked best for me.
      As YMMV, I assume that you will chose what works best for you.
