Summary: Google added three handy business features for Apps on Android as the company moves to entice enterprises to consider its smartphone platform.

Google on Thursday added three handy business features for Apps on Android as the company moves to entice enterprises to consider its smartphone platform.

Among the key additions:

  • A new Google Apps Device Policy app so employees can find a lost or stolen Android device, find it on a map, ring it and reset the device password remotely.

  • Apps administrators have an option to encrypt data on a device. This encrypted storage will now be extended to Honeycomb tablets.
  • A Google Apps lookup service to make finding people at work easier.

These features are specifically designed for Google Apps users in business and education.

What will they think of next?
Maybe I'm missing the boat here - but I have an iPad and a non-phone android device (Entourage Edge). Many people complain about iTunes - but, whether I need apps for my iPhone or iPad - I know where to find them. I have been tring to get Skype for the Edge - and only find it if you have an android phone, I can't seem to obtain and decent apps for the Edge - can't get them from Android Market, etc. Am I doing something wrong???

Entourage Edge is not an Android device, per se...

@mickeyg59 ...but merely incorporates the Android OS, as an add-on feature. That's why when you run Android applications they appear exactly as they would on a typical 4" (or less) smartphone display -- which must look seriously unusual on the Edge's much larger screen.

As to getting 'decent' apps from Android Market, that could be tricky if your edge is using one of the older versions of Android...like, say, 1.6. In that case, very few cool apps will apply and - due to Android Market rules - you won't even be able to see them, while perusing AM from your Edge.

Of course, folks using the original iPhone have a similar problem. Not only are latest versions of iOS at least somewhat incompatible, but also many of the latest, coolest App Store offerings won't work well, if at all. (For example, Apple's first-generation handsets have no GPS radio.)

The good news: with Android, you can usually download & test any app, just for laughs. Simply go to Settings and enable 'Install Non-Market Apps'. Then, go app-shopping at AppBrain or AndroLib or any of the other competing (non-Google) repositories. Here's where to look in Settings.:
