Google fumbles iOS Gmail app launch: Is there lasting damage?

Summary: On Twitter, Google responded with a simple "we messed up" as an iOS Gmail launch goes bad.

SHARE:

Google launched a new Gmail app for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, but fumbled the rollout with a bug that broke notifications and had to pull it.

On Google's Gmail blog, the company trumpeted the launch of the Gmail iOS app. It wasn't too much longer that Google had to back track big time.

Google said:

Update: 11/2/11: Earlier today we launched a new Gmail app for iOS. Unfortunately, it contained a bug which broke notifications and caused users to see an error message when first opening the app. We’ve removed the app while we correct the problem, and we’re working to bring you a new version soon. Everyone who’s already installed the app can continue to use it.

In a nutshell, some Google users have the Gmail iOS app, but most don't.

On Twitter, Google responded with a simple "we messed up."

The larger question here is whether this botched rollout causes any lasting damage. Google hasn't had many high-profile flubs like this---until now.

The iOS app will look like this once the bug is fixed.

It looks just like the web based client with the slide out sidebar that hmmmm Facebook just recently implemented. Quicker to continue using the integrated iPhone email app

      @mike2k

Remember, the Google iOS Search app has always had the slideout.

Never had that app. Guess I shouldn't be so quick to accuse.

@mike2k: Good luck accessing Gmail's Priority Inbox, Labels and Colour Labels in the native iOS e-mail app :-|.

Surely it's a good thing it looks like the Gmail Mobile website?

  • Typical Google.

Though I'm surprised they pulled it.

I don't know, maybe they're finally learning that people are tired of being their beta testers?

  • Lasting damage? Maybe

Now that we know what development route google is taking with this app, I am not planning on using it again. Essentially it is a web interface wrapped into an app. Waste of time on my part for downloading it. Apple's email app is way better.

Gmail works fine as an Exchange account in iOS's Mail App or you can use IMAP if you want.

What is the point of this?

@bannedagain: Of course you can. The same is true when using an Android device.

Good luck accessing Gmail's Priority Inbox, Labels and Colour Labels in the native iOS e-mail app though :-|.

  • Lesson # 1 : never use version .0 software

Duh? Never use .0 software, be it from Google, Apple or anyone else, on a production system - it takes a while to fix the bugs.

  • Clue: Google has NO quality control

Google has zero QA process and releases stuff when the developer claims its ready. This is a known fact that nobody likes to talk about.

This is long overdue. The Gmail app in Honeycomb is exceptional.

Why do you need an app when the Native E-mail client for iPhones is actually pretty good?

Essentially it is a web interface wrapped into an app. Waste of time on my part for http://www.oyu.gen.tr
