Google intros 'Me on the Web' identity management tool

Google is pushing its privacy settings offerings just a tad higher with the addition of some new identity management options.

These tools come in the form of Me on the Web, a new settings set that Google is introducing for users to monitor their identities on the web.

Accessible via Google Dashboard, Me on the Web is basically an extension of Google Alerts and then some. Some of the features include:

• Creating/managing a Google profile that will appear in search results
• Setting up Google Alerts
• Receiving automatic suggestions for possible Alerts terms
• Tips on controlling what third-party info and how to remove content

The idea behind these security tips and tools is that every single post published, whether it be an image on a photo-sharing site or a comment on a social-networking page, reflects our identity in some way. This could be good or bad, and many people want to keep personal info as private and as separate from work (or strangers...or even family members) as possible.

Additionally, not everything posted about a person might have been published by him or her, but rather a third-party. This is where Me on the Web could step in to help provide tips to remove unwanted content from search results.
