Google is going after the enterprise geospatial market with a planned launch of Earth Builder, a tool that allows companies to overlay data on Google Earth and Google Maps.
With the move, Earth Builder will compete with geospatial desktop software. Google plans to take Earth Builder to key verticals such as oil and gas and government. These map mashups can be distributed publicly or internally across departments.
Google is aiming to court IT administrators with lower costs---the software runs on the search giant's servers---speed and storage and backup. The general idea is that enterprise customers can piggyback on Google's mapping platform to layer data onto maps. Google appears to be targeting companies like ESRI, Microsoft's MapPoint, Autodesk and a bevy of others.
In a blog post, the company noted that EarthBuilder allows employees to use familiar tools and companies can save on storage and computing power.
Earth Builder will utilize tools such as Google Maps APIs as well as Google Earth for Android and APIs and run on the Google Apps infrastructure.
Earth Builder will be available in more than 100 countries in the third quarter and be "competitively priced with traditional mapping products."
