Google launches new Chrome privacy feature, Keep My Opt-Outs

Summary: Google launched a feature in its Chrome browser that allows you to permanently opt out of ad tracking cookies.

Google on Monday launched a feature in its Chrome browser that allows you to permanently opt out of ad tracking cookies.

The feature, an extension for Chrome, can allow a user to opt out or tailor the personalization of ads.

The search giant's move comes as rival Mozilla is also exploring features to make it easier to opt out of behavioral targeting. The Federal Trade Commission has pushed for a Do Not track mechanism to better guard privacy.

Google said in a blog post that it has 50 companies that will allow you to opt out. But Google also added:

The industry has faced a recurring technical challenge with these opt-outs and controls. If you clear your browser’s cookies, all customized settings — including these opt-outs — are lost. Another challenge is that sometimes new companies offer opt-outs, so you’d have to check frequently to make sure you’re opted out of what you want. A better “Do Not Track” mechanism is a browser extension that means you can easily opt out of personalized advertising from all participating ad networks only once and store that setting permanently.

        You might want to add BetterPrivacy to the group if you have Firefox.

        In any case, if you use Chrome, Google just wants to ensure that they are the only one spying on you.

    So does this get rid of Flash cookies too?

    So Google is pretending that they care about privacy by adding that. Meanwhile Chrome phones home on every page change as well as secretly updates itself with no option to turn that off.

    • I have wondered this too.

      @Mythos7

My router logs show a few .google domains that get dialed every time I run it. What exactly is Chrome dialing, and what for?

        You know Google, the more profile data it can build the more of our privacy it can sell.

    Haha google respecting users' privacy? This has to be a joke. Google logs forever everything you do when you use their services, especially (but not only) if you are logged on the - so called - google account. Youtube, gmail, googlesearch etc are actively tracked even if you have "history" turned off. Read their terms of service, or - even better - try to contact them on such matters. They don't even allow gmail accounts anymore, if you don't accept the whole "product" (read google account). It's a pitty EU is only "pushing" Microsoft. Google IS the Big Brother..
