Here's a Google project that everyone can support. Google Maps is being upgraded with new live transit updates so you know just how late that bus is going to be.

Available information will include both live and scheduled departure times, route maps and service alerts.

Transit riders will be able to view up-to-the-minute updates either via Google Maps on in a browser or on a mobile device as long as it is running Android 1.6 or higher. That shouldn't be too hard to come by for Android users these days.

At this time, this feature is only available in four U.S. cities. That would consist of San Francisco and Portland (which are predictable since these are two of the testing grounds for Google Offers) as well as Boston and San Diego, the last of which is a bit of a surprise to see rather than larger cities with busier transit systems such as Washington, D.C., Chicago and New York City. But given that these are the early stages of the project, it's probably better to master the system on a smaller city scale first.

Google Maps transit updates are also going live abroad in Madrid and Turin.

What this is a very evil idea from Google, very evil indeed, it means I can no longer get away with blaming public transport for me being late. This is the most evil thing Google has done for a long long time.

You should always ALWAYS have multiple stories prepared. You can't be a model employee without good stories. Pipes burst this morning, you thought your belly ache was appendicitis (never mind you had it taken out 30 years ago), alien invasion on your block etc.

  • Awesome

This is great. I can't wait until it rolls out in Philadelphia. SEPTA is constantly late and their notification system is terrible. Google has already one upped them in a big way with Google Transit on scheduling and transit directions...

This isn't the early stages of development. Seattle has had this in place for more than a year from http://www.onebusaway.org/ and works on nearly all platforms.

The project is funded by Nokia Research Center, Google, and the National Science Foundation.

Los Angeles and other major cities already have Nextstop.com. Google will have the same issues this web site suffers from -- namely, they get their data from the bus GPS and when the GPS is turned off (drivers do that, you know) or malfunctioning, there is no signal, hence, the bus does not appear on the map. Happens a lot in LA on the buses I frequent. Good luck, I hope it works, but GIGO!

Excellent website you have here but I was curious about if you knew of any community forums that cover the same topics discussed in this article? I'd really love to be a part of community where I can get opinions from other knowledgeable people that share the same interest. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.
