Google Plus: The top 10 missing features

By | July 19, 2011, 2:00am PDT

Summary: The technology world has been captivated and fixated by Google+ for the past few weeks. It’s easy to forget that it’s still in closed beta and that lots of stuff still needs to be fixed or added. Here’s a list.

There’s a lot to like about Google+ and it has the potential to make a major impact on the future of the Internet. After just two weeks in closed beta, it already has 10 million users. Still, it’s far from perfect. I’ve put together my list of the top 10 things Google needs to fix or add in Google+. Take a look at the list and then jump into the discussion and argue with me by adding the fixes that you think deserve more attention in Google+.

1. Let us mute someone from the Stream

On Google+ it is a lot easier to find friends and people to follow than any social network that has been built so far. And, with Circles, you can divided them into groups and then easily jump between the various streams of your Circles. However, there is also the big “Stream,” which aggregates all of the people you have in Circles and this is the default view you see on Google+. The one feature missing here is the ability to mute a person from the Stream (while still being able to see their updates in their Circle). You can mute individual posts from the Stream, but you can’t currently mute a person. This is badly needed so that you can stay connected to interesting people but not have the overly chatty people monopolize your Stream.

2. Show list of my +1 items from Google+

The +1 button allows you to give the thumbs up to really good Google+ posts and updates. However, this should also work like a list of favorites or bookmarks. Right now, there’s no way to see a list of the things where I have clicked +1. If I go to my profile there is a +1 tab, but that’s the list of external items (from web sites or Google search results) where I’ve clicked +1. The items from Google+ itself need to be added to this list.

3. Fix the share and re-share issue

One of the stickiest issues Google needs to figure out is the Share functionality. If you’re familiar with Twitter, this is like a Retweet (RT). However, when you share a post on Google+, it removes all of the comments and +1s, allows you to add your own comments above the post, and then your followers can add their own plusses and comments. That can be pretty cool, except when a bunch of the people you follow all share and re-share the same post. With the approach Google has taken to sharing, there may not be an easy answer, but something will need to be done to sort this out, at least for stuff that gets shared more than 2-3 times in your stream.

4. Let us sort the stream by raw timeline

By default, the big Stream (and the Circle streams as well) are sorted by relevance and popularity, based on the number of +1 votes and shares, so that the most interesting stuff rises to the top of the Stream. However, Google should also give us the option to sort the stream based solely on timestamp, so that we can see the stuff from people who post interesting things but don’t have as many followers to buoy their posts.

5. Allow comments to be threaded

This is an issue of intense debate, but I think Google should allow threaded commenting on Google+ so that people can comment on and respond to comments, and not just the original post. That would make the threads a lot easier to follow when they get a lot of comments. And, comments on comments could be collapsed by default and users could simply click a plus sign to expand and view them. However, the threading would only need to go three layers deep to allow a response and a counterpoint.

6. Add more functionality to mobile

It’s impressive that Google had its Android app for Google+ ready to download the moment that it launched the “Field Trial” of the new service, and shortly thereafter it submitted an iPhone/iPad app to Apple for approval in the App Store. Even better, the Android app for Google+ is very well done. However, it’s not perfect and it could make the mobile Google+ experience a lot better by adding key functionality — e.g. the ability to +1 a comment, the ability to join a hangout, the ability to easily flip between the big stream and circle streams, etc. While they’re at it, Google should add more core functionality to its HTML app as well. That would be a great way to drive more participation and get a jump on Facebook, which still doesn’t have a great mobile experience.

7. Open it up to Google Apps users

In order to get into the Google+ beta you need a Gmail address (or a Google Account). It does not currently work for the Google Apps domains, which are business accounts where the company is using a corporate version of Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, and other Google web apps. Google has stated that Google+ pages for businesses and brands are coming soon. Hopefully, Google+ for Google Apps users won’t be far behind. Since some people may end up having separate Google+ accounts for personal (Gmail) and business (Google Apps) use, Google should also consider options for letting those users log in to both accounts from different tabs in the Chrome web browser.

8. Integrate private messaging

One of the biggest things Google+ is missing compared to rivals Facebook and Twitter is the ability to send a private message to a mutual contact. Sure, there are a few workarounds and hacks that let you do it, but Google needs to make this part of the product’s primary functionality. It also wouldn’t hurt to integrate GoogleTalk (instant messaging) as well.

UPDATE: Google has added a “Send an email” button in Google+ profiles. So, you can now send an email to anyone with a Google+ profile (by default), even if they don’t have you in one of their circles. This is different than private messaging, which I still think would be useful.

9. Set up verified accounts

Since there are already celebrities showing up on Google+ — and a lot of people who are impersonating celebrities — Google needs to set up something similar to Twitter’s Verified Accounts. Just do a search for “Mark Zuckerberg” or “Lady Gaga” on Google+ and take a look at how many accounts there are. There are also plenty of sneaky imposters, like the person who pretended to be Apple’s Jony Ive (the account has been deleted).

10. Show list of interactions with each user

Another useful feature that Google should add is the ability to go to a user’s profile page and see all of that person’s interactions with you — their +1s and comments on your posts, as well as your +1s and comments on their posts. This would help figure out if you should add a person to your Circles, and if so, which Circles you should put them in or add them to.

When you go to Google+, you can find my profile here.

I haven't been able to figure out a way to make exceptions on posts, like view- available to all: except so&so.
and the dedicated news feed I think might have some related concepts.
It would be sweet to have Facebook's event manager. I think they can integrate Google Calender with Google+ to easily share an event with specific circles.

Try to be gentle
ZazieLavender 19th Jul
Google+ is still in it's infancy, and they may implement more and more features as they prepare to release it to the public.
@ZazieLavender why should he "be gentle"? only fanbois do that - real journalists/bloggers/etc. point out flaws with an objective lens. Seems he's done that here imo.

We are now using Chrome V13. I think it's fair to assume that revisions/upgrades may arrive on a regular basis. By all means, be gentle. Google+ V13 is just around the corner, and it's going to be great!
Google???s previous social attempts have been unmitigated train wrecks, if we???re being completely honest. Open Social seo link building failed because Google couldn???t get Facebook and other social networks to buy into the idea of a shared social identity. Google Wave missed the target by not being useful enough to attract any users. Google Buzz freaked people out by naively overstepping its bounds on privacy.

Facebook take note
johnjo1 19th Jul
A lot of those features are also missing on Facebook!
@johnjo1 You're absolutely right!
@johnjo1 I was thinking the same thing when I was reading this. WTF? They're not MISSING...They're WANTED. There is a difference.

@johnjo1
Yep, they sure are. I think there is a good chance that we'll see these wanted/missing features in Google+ before we'll see them in Facebook.
I hope the Goolge+ development API will be released soon. Some of the missing features can then just be developed.

I aleardy made my own widget for Google+ You can completely customize it and there is a beta version of including the update stream. You can find it at: http://widgetsplus.com

API Support
facebook@... 19th Jul
Along with #7 for me, a lack of API support is missing. It is also missing a slogan. May I proffer: "Google+: Like Nothing you have ever seen before if you have never seen Facebook or Myspace before."

@facebook@...

hee hee.

The slogan I've heard that I really like is "Google+: The place to find all your friends you already blocked on Facebook."

Its sole appeal for most users is that unlike Facebook, their parents and grandparents don't have Google+ yet. Since I do a lot of advertising with Google, I know they're going to happily use this data for targeting the way they already do with adwords, so I'm way less enamored with the idea than others. Facebook is a social media company, Google is an advertising broker, so the expectations should be different. Most of the existing features make it easier for Google to sort you as a user, and only obliquely help you connect more effectively.
@monicabower "I know they're going to happily use this data for targeting the way they already do with adwords"

Facebook does this too. I'm not seeing your point.

@blueskip I thought @monicabower was quite succinct. "Most of the existing features make it easier for Google to sort you as a user, and only obliquely help you connect more effectively. "

Facebook was designed from the ground up so Zuckerberg get hot chicks. Google+ was designed from the ground up so Larry Page could sell advertising. One is designed for social, the other designed for advertisers.

Expectations
schmandel@... 20th Jul
@monicabower
you said: "Facebook is a social media company, Google is an advertising broker, so the expectations should be different. "

For the foreseeable future an advertising broker may actually have a viable self-sustaining business model. Right now the description "social media company" screams "sell me before the novelty of this free service fades".

@msticlaru it is enabled and it does work... I've used it for simple text chatting without any problem.

ps: no idea why there's no reply button on your post...
You don't need a Gmail account to use Google+. A friend is using a Hotmail account.

I disagree with about threaded conversations. That would make it confusing to read replies. Better yet to use "quote" system.

Otherwise agreed with the article.

@bradavon

Agreed. I think the current model is the most intuitive. All replies should be in a one deep thread from the OP.
I'd like to see an Events mechanism. This is one of the most useful aspects of Facebook.

@bradavon This is the big one I've been waiting for, too. Integrated party-planning is the only thing I really cared much for on FB.

I guess individual "walls" would be kind of nice, too, for posting "Happy Birthday" messages and such.
Number 2 is already possible. Go on your profile editor, on the "+1" tab and "show this tab on my profile"

@Z!dd0 I'm fairly certain Jason is talking about things you "plus" from within G+. The +1s tab only shows external websites you've "plussed."
#1 is already possible. Just put everyone whose posts you want to see into your Following circle, and then click its link in the strem page. Sure, it still defaults to showing everyone, but it's one click away and still allows you the easy option to view everyone, even those you might have wanted muted previously, without working to turn them on again.

And #8 is easy by just typing "+{name}" in the "+Add circles or people to share with..." box. You have to specifically disable sharing for the messagee if you don't want it getting around, but "forwardable by default" is also the way every e-mail, IM, and other messaging system in the world already works, so even there, G+ has the advantage.

"1. Let us mute someone from the Stream"

Or, even better, control it with a circle.

"5. Allow comments to be threaded"

Threading? Yes.

ZDNet's insane Talkback system as a model? H*** NO! ZDNet's system is horrible, and the "three deep" limitation is an indication that it's fundamentally broken - limiting it to three deep is not a fix. Google engineers I'm sure are far more capable of building threading properly rather than having to resort to hackish artificial limitations like the "three deep" limitation ZDNet has.

@CobraA1- Fully Agree!

And further (yet constantly repeating) is the broken conversation expansion link which (even as I write this) gives me "Oops. Something went wrong."

ZDNet Talback=One of the worst conversation systems I've ever seen.
@lampson@... Not to mention the "make a small edit, report it as spam" system, which makes any attempts at spelling corrections difficult.

ZDNet's talkbacks are certainly not cutting it. It really seems like they're borrowing worst practices from other systems rather than best practices.

Thankfully, Google already has better threading systems, such as in Gmail. Threading systems ZDNet should be using. Google clearly has the lead over ZDNet if we're going to be talking about threading conversations.

Damned skippy! This talkback system sucks out loud... whoever designed this steaming pile of crap needs to be immediately reassigned to janitorial duties.

Yes, #8 is already there.
I would like to be able to disable re-sharing *before* a post goes up.
Resharing with comment stream forks is a big issue.

Events
SenorAlejandro 19th Jul
This is another one I'm waiting on. Facebook allows you to create an "Event" (such as for a party or movie night), invite others to it, track RSVPs, and optionally allow attendees to post comments on the Event's information page. You can also set co-owners of the event who can make modifications if needed.

Some friends and I have experimented with trying to set up activity events in G+, but there's really no good way to do it yet.

I've wanted #1 for a while... perhaps being able to silence a whole Circle from the Stream would be easier...

#7... I don't want to log into two profiles... when GApps gets Profiles I want to MOVE all data from my gmail Profile and G+/+1 into my Apps account. I don't want 2 accounts... which is why I won't add photos to Google+.

You can instant message with gtalk.. its on the left side of the screen and has always been there. Not sure what OP is talking about here.
Um. Email is a private message, just in the same inbox with your other private messages... why would I want to create ANOTHER place to look for my private messages. That's the point of Google+: integrate social networking with the tools I already use. I don't need another log in, or another place to look for stuff. Keep it simple, integrate it with what I'm already using, and leave it alone. That's what I don't like about Facebook. There are too many different options for communicating. Google+ allows me to instant chat (via Gtalk, contrary to your article), send an email (private message), and send a public message (comments and/or stream updates). I'm sure they'll integrate Google Calendar and Google Docs as they build out the network. I would like to see +1 easier to use when I'm roaming the web... perhaps a Chrome Extension would make this possible? happy
How do I +1 this article again?
