Google revamps its commerce search

By | March 29, 2011, 8:00am PDT

Summary: Google rolled out its Commerce Search 3.0 in a move to surface more local products, recommend items and give retailers more merchandising options.

Google on Tuesday rolled out its Commerce Search 3.0 in a move to surface more local products, recommend items and give retailers more merchandising options.

Specifically, Google Commerce Search 3.0 includes:

  • Search as you type;
  • Local product availability to show whether an item is available at a store to get a product faster than online;
  • Merchandising tools to create product promotions by search queries;
  • And a product recommendation engine that’s available in Google Labs.

While eBay and Amazon currently have the e-commerce plumbing infrastructure, it’s clear Google sees commerce as a big growth area. In fact, it appears that many tech giants have gone commerce happy. IBM has also put commerce as a big growth market along with analytics.

Google also appears to be looking to go upstream a bit with retailers. The company also said that Forever21, General Nutrition Company (GNC) and L’Occitane are Google Commerce Search customers now.
