Google: U.S. trade restrained by Internet-censoring governments

By | September 9, 2010, 10:15am PDT

Summary: Google has issued a warning call to Washington that free trade is being obstructed by countries that censor the Internet and that it’s “high time” something is done about it.

How critical is an open Internet to the free flow of global trade?

Google has issued a warning call to Washington, saying that foreign governments that censor the Internet are unfairly restraining U.S. trade and creating a barrier for U.S. companies looking to business abroad, according to a Reuters report.

At a public meeting at Google’s headquarters this week, Google Chief Legal Office David Drummond told U.S. trade representatives that “it’s high time for us to really start sinking our teeth into” a push against censorship of the Internet. He said:

If this were happening with physical trade and manufacturing goods, we’d all be saying this violates trade agreements pretty fundamentally… We have great opportunities now with pending trade agreements to start putting some pressure on countries to recognize that Internet freedom not only is a core value - that we should be holding them to account from a human rights standpoint - but also that if you want to be part of the community of free trade, you are going to have to find a way to allow the Internet to be open.

Clearly, the argument is targeted at countries such as China, which has had a rocky relationship with Google for most of the year, following Google’s bombshell news alert in January that it had been hacked through a sophisticated cyber attack that originated in China.

The company, which said it would no longer censor the Internet on for the government, has re-routed Google China traffic to Google Hong Kong. In July, the Chinese government renewed Google’s license to operate in China for one year - a move that was uncertain for a period of time while the government considered the renewal application.

U.S. businesses, Hell-the U.S. economy as a whole, are far more adversely effected by China's refusal to let the Yuan float freely than any internet censoring, and how well has the U.S. Government done trying to coerce China to change that?! The fact is that the Chinese government has all the cards, or in this case Treasury Securities. Until we don't need China to finance our Federal debt the Chinese can do whatever they want, including hack Google to their heart's content, or at least their ability's extent.
They haven't been able to force each American to buy an insurance they don't want or business owners to file a 1099 form for any transaction having 600 or more dollars involved. Nor will they raise tax on every American right in the middle of a depression or impose a Cap & Trade on small business owners.

US would be better off if Chinese government were running this nation now.

they're either crying about how unfair the world treats them or they're getting caught stealing ideas from Apple. Maybe they should just use all that wasted energy and fix their search engine.

but their leadership reminds me of a pack of spoiled, thumbsucking brats. Now that China flogged them publicly and smacked their overreaching paws, they go running to the federal government mommy. This, after the Reds they're whoring favors from busted through their laughably porous datacenter defenses, pawning their in-house security for all to see.

They're such a mollycoddled, infantile bunch.

Google: We have great opportunities now with pending trade agreements to start putting some pressure on countries...

So is this what it's going to take to FINALLY bring some sanity to our trade policies??

Unfortunately, it's Googs that has climbed into the drivers seat, merrily representing the rest of the multinational conglomeracy in pleading their case to the very ones who created the trade madness we're in to begin with. GO FIGURE.

If only we could ship the whole bunch to China - to do with them what they please! - on one of the unending container ships stuffed with yankee dollars we're booting their way.
poor babies. Again trying to tell the world how righteous (sp??) they and generally the US is...and how the rest of the world must follow. Grow up and understand the fundamental fact that you are expressing an opinion and that is all it is...an opinion, not fact, not necessarily right and not necessarily the best for others.
