In its earnings release today, Google announced a major shift to the executive ranks, calling it a way to "streamline decision making and create clearer lines of responsibility and accountability at the top of the company."

Here are the details:

  • Starting April 4, co-founder Larry Page, becomes CEO and takes over day-to-day operations.
  • Co-founder Sergey Brin will focus on strategic projects, specifically, new products.
  • Eric Schmidt becomes Executive Chairman and will focus externally on "deals, partnerships, customers and broader business relationships, government outreach and technology thought leadership--all of which are increasingly important given Google's global reach."
  • Internally, Schmidt will continue to act as an advisor to Larry and Sergey.

On a call with analysts this afternoon, Schmidt, Page and Brin offered their thoughts on the movement for analysts. In their remarks, they praised each other's work and stressed that the change shouldn't result in any major changes to the company's overall strategy. Schmidt said the new structure approved by the board involved "elevating" him and moving Larry into the day-to-day while Sergey will focus on new products.

About Larry, Schmidt said:

I want to say very clearly that I believe Larry is ready. He has been working on this area for a long time. His ideas are very interesting and clever, and it is time for him to have a shot at running this and doing it, and I'm sure he will do a fantastic job.

Schmidt called their partnership "wonderful" and said he is sure that it will continue. He continued:

We are friends. We are coworkers. We are computer scientists. We have a common vision.

Prior to the call, in a press release, the company offered these official statements.

From Eric:

We've been talking about how best to simplify our management structure and speed up decision making for a long time. By clarifying our individual roles we'll create clearer responsibility and accountability at the top of the company. In my clear opinion, Larry is ready to lead and I'm excited about working with both him and Sergey for a long time to come.

In his own statement, Page said:

Eric has clearly done an outstanding job leading Google for the last decade. The results speak for themselves. There is no other CEO in the world that could have kept such headstrong founders so deeply involved and still run the business so brilliantly. Eric is a tremendous leader and I have learned innumerable lessons from him. His advice and efforts will be invaluable to me as I start in this new role. Google still has such incredible opportunity--we are only at the beginning and I can't wait to get started.

The company added more in a Schmidt blog post with the headline "An update from the chairman."

  • Wow, not sure what to make of it, but, it will make Google look more hip,

    having a very young CEO that is also one of the founders.

    • Actually.....

      @DonnieBoy
Larry Page got jealous that Zuckerberg had a movie made about him, and wanted to try his hand at CEOing so he might get a movie, too. Good luck with that, Larry.
      P.S. Guess the pic in the article shows who's in the driver's seat, eh?

        @Userama You make a statement based on a photograph. You make an even more ridiculous statement about a film. It's amazing that you beat 1,000,000 other sperm.
        This is just a press release about how a company is changing. Nothing more, nothing less.
        All you can do is make something up because you don't like what you are reading, and what you say is completely pants.
        Grow up.

      • aliball68, I wonder if you would show the same indignation

        should someone speak as "poorly" of Microsoft or Apple?

      • We don't have to take things at their face values

        @Userama
I think its a brialliant idea for one of the them to take over and lead the company in order to avoid any potential creation of vacum if Eric Smith happens to be sick (God forbid) just to avoid the same fate like apple as Steve Jobs falls sick. We shouldn't always take changes at their negative face values. I bet you, a time will come when Sergey will also take over as CEO from Page. It's all strategically well planned.

    • It actually sounds as though there may be

      @DonnieBoy
      underlying problems that will not be discussed with those not involved.
      Eric Schmidt is the reason they are where they are now, I wonder if the problem is that Page and Brin blame Schmidt with their lack of success in matter related to projects like Google App, as well as the host of discontinued products.

      The "nail in the coffin" may have very well been the lackluster reception to ChromeOS?

      • ChromeOS!?

        @Mister Spock

        Is that thing still around?

  • GOODBYE ERIC!

    Don't let the door hit you on the way out! Maybe Google can look a little less creepy.

  • Bad move IMO

    ES was the reason Google soared.

      @htotten
      ...thanks to the strategic plans he stole from Apple while he was on their board.

  • gog

    Once Apple does search and social network, we can dump Google... AH just imagine a world with no more android :)

  • Not a good move

    Page is not big on user privacy so I don't think this is a good move at all.

  • Exit Doors

    I think this is the polite way of showing the doors. I have mixed feelings about this transition. ES is the one who gave it corporation status from research labs. Of course he also dropped "No" from do no evil though.

  • Will consumers have e-mail input?

    I hope the new company officers will post a consumer contact e-mail where issues with Google can be sent to management and heard, such as a known problem where certain pictures do not display in gmail. Currently, I only found help forums listed. Google even lists officers, but again, no contact info. The only contact info I was able to find was a fax number. My fax doesn't work.

  • Strongly positive move on their part

    If you're a Google fan, you have to love the change. Schmidt was probably stretched too thin in trying to manage both the development efforts and the strategic partnerships with other companies/organizations/governments. A Google where all three are actively engaged will be a formidable competitor.
