Google's YouTube attempts to go premium

Google is reportedly plotting a YouTube overhaul that would focus on premium channels and professional programming.

The move, reported by the Wall Street Journal, revolves around creating roughly 20 premium channels that would have five to 10 hours of original programming.

And the real kicker: Google is ready to spend $100 million to create original content.

Netflix has already gone down the path of original content.

The difference between Google and Netflix, however, is know-how. Netflix knows Hollywood as a partner. Google is partner and foe and if you had to pick one it would probably be the latter. The other issue to ponder is whether Google and the emphasis on putting engineers first under CEO Larry Page will really equate to programming success. After all, the left brain-right brain divide is pretty vast.

However, Google’s revamp of YouTube would make it more aligned with the nascent Google TV effort.

YouTube would kill Netflix anytime. For starter, NetFlix is limited to US & Canada. At least for now, YouTube is a global brand. 2. Google, is a 250bn company, Netflix, try 1 bn.

I see Google taking on NetFlix really well. Even if Google doesn't make too much money on Premium, they would surely make tons on ads.

Or do you honestlly believe that the RIAA will just let Google get away with selling their content overseas?

That's why Netflix is only avaliable in the US and Canada, and Google will be stuck with the same limitations, selling to the US and Canada only, but being too late to the party to unseat Netflix.

@tatiGmail But neither can advance without the support of the content providers. Good on Netflix for coming up with original content. That's the first step, but no matter what you/they come up with...we still want to see our network produced shows. The networks need to join the rest of us in the 21st century.

They could launch initiatives similar to Google Books that would make older copyrighted works available on Youtube with only token payments to the studios. They could outspend the entire movie industry in bribing Congress to change copyright laws in their favor. They have the spare cash on hand to do it all without breaking a sweat. Larry Page himself is worth $20 billion, he could declare total war on Hollywood or just decide to buy half of it.

Thankfully the iPhone/iTunes sync features give this extra level of redundancy, but you have those sync features turned on, and you have plug your phone into your computer once in a while.
