Groupon bringing its instant daily deals to Foursquare

Foursquare already features special discounts of its own at select local businesses, but now it’s getting an extra push from Groupon.

The maker of the geo-tagging social media app recently rolled out more targeted daily deals with five partners (LivingSocial, Gilt City, AT&T Interactive, BuyWithMe and Zozi) earlier this month. Almost immediately, questions arose about why Groupon wasn’t included.

Well, it’s here now. The real highlight is the addition of Groupon Now, which are real-time deals and discounts that come in handy, especially when at a restaurant, bar or cafe.

The benefit to consumers is obvious, but the real advantage here is for restaurant owners. We all know that Groupon partnerships don’t exactly work out for all of its merchants.

But with this plan via Foursquare, vendors can schedule when they want the deals to go live rather than letting consumers come in whenever they fancy for a certain period of months. For example, maybe a post-lunch rush deal or something for a sleepy Sunday afternoon to get customers in the door rather than busier times around happy hour or dinner on a Friday night.

As for regular Groupon deals, those will pop up on Foursquare just like the standard ones from LivingSocial and other partners.

Foursquare users will begin to see Groupon deals rolling out throughout the United States on their mobile apps starting today. So far Groupon Now deals only been spotted in Chicago, but expect more cities to have these features by the end of the weekend.

The Foursquare app and membership is free, and it is available for the iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, WebOS, and Symbian, among others. There’s also a mobile portal if you don’t have a smartphone.
