HP being investigated by German and Russian authorities over bribes, says WSJ

By | April 14, 2010, 6:07pm PDT

Hewlett-Packard executives are reportedly being investigated by German and Russian authorities for paying out millions of dollars in bribes, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The Journal reported that German prosecutors are investigating whether HP executives paid out $10.9 million in bribes to win a contract to sell hardware to the prosecutor general of the Russian Federation.

The report cited “people familiar with the matter” and a statement on the Russian prosecutor’s site. A Google Translate version of the Russian prosecutor office didn’t show any mentions of HP. HP is cooperating with the investigation.

This investigation sounds like it could be messy and allegedly involves various shell companies across the globe, said the Journal, which cited documents it reviewed.

On a more serious note, didn't HP hire some execs from Siemens who were found doing exactly the same thing? Did HP think that was a job qualification? Of course firing the people involved would be tantamount to a confession, so that won't happen either.
