Hewlett-Packard plans to name Disney executive Michael Mendenhall chief marketing officer as of Oct. 1.

The move is interesting since it may reveal that HP wants to step up its brand image--and possibly develop more of an emotional attachment with customers. Disney has that emotional attachment with customers as does Apple.

And let's face it--technology on the consumer side of the house is clearly more about fashion and marketing than gigabytes these days.

In a statement HP said Mendenhall will be responsible for "all aspects of HP's corporate marketing operations globally, including brand marketing, customer intelligence and corporate communications."

Mendenhall has been at Disney for 17 years and currently is in charge of all marketing and publicity for Disney's parks and resorts. Let's see how he crafts HP's image.
