A few details have surfaced about Hewlett-Packard's cloud plans courtesy of a LinkedIn update.

The Register snared a screenshot from the LinkedIn profile of Scott McClellan, the chief technologist at HP.

In a nutshell, McClellan, who has removed the content, said:

  • HP has an object storage service built from scratch.
  • A compute, networking and block storage service where users provide a spec and the system automatically deploys and manages.
  • Common shared services for federation, identity management, auditing, analytics and other goodies.
  • A future HP cloud that has APIs for Java, Ruby and other open source languages.

For good measure, the Register tossed in that HP will detail more about its cloud strategy at VMware's VMworld conference. That tidbit is from an anonymous source, but the summer timing sounds about right.

Naturally, no one is talking, but the additional color about HP's cloud seems to add up. At HP's recent analyst powwow, CEO Leo Apotheker outlined the company's cloud plans in broad strokes. McClellan appears to have added a little meat to that sketch.

I would like to say this is good news. Clearly, HP is not just foisting "another tablet" on the market without the vertical integration of a full-fledged, comprehensive strategy. That's cool.

However, I will continue to appeal, to anyone at HP listening, to please produce one more hardware segment - a smartphone that is larger and more professional looking than the pebble Pre. I'm envisioning a couple of Veers for my kids, a Pre for my wife, and Touchpads...but where's my phone? No, I would NOT use the Pre (I still use a Treo 680 - it's a brick, relatively speaking, but it least it looks something like a professional device rather than a make-up compact).

    And hurry up about it.
