IBM acquires PSS, bolsters information management portfolio

Summary: Privately held PSS provides software that analyzes data governance policy and disposal of information. The general idea is to help companies meet legal requirements while holding the line on storage costs.

IBM said that it has acquired PSS Systems for an undisclosed sum.

Privately held PSS provides software that analyzes data governance policy and disposal of information. The general idea is to help companies meet legal requirements while holding the line on storage costs.

According to IBM, PSS software is primarily targeted at chief legal officers as well as IT executives. PSS premier suite is called Atlas.

The PSS portfolio will be added into IBM’s Information Lifecycle Management product line, part of IBM’s software unit. Information lifecycle management refers to the assessment of content, archiving, imaging and recordkeeping as well as analytics.

PSS does have a strong list of customers in key verticals. GE, ConocoPhillips and Pfizer are PSS customers.

IBM has been on a bit of a spending spree when it comes to smaller acquisitions. The company recently bought Netezza for $1.7 billion, but also acquired OpenPages, which makes compliance software, and Unica and Storwize all in the last three months. The common thread is data analytics and information management.
