Summary: Public cloud computing services will be a $72.9 billion market in 2015, up from $21.5 billion in 2010, according to IDC.

SHARE:

Public cloud computing services will be a $72.9 billion market in 2015, up from $21.5 billion in 2010, according to IDC.

That growth equates to a compound annual growth rate of 27.6 percent, but IDC estimated that public cloud computing will fuel the information technology industry for the next 25 years.

IDC defines a public cloud as a service that is commercially offered to an "unrestricted marketplace of potential users."

In fact, IDC is estimating that public cloud computing will account for 46 percent new growth for overall IT spending---notably in applications, app development and deployment, infrastructure, storage and servers.

By the numbers:

  • One in 7 dollars spent on packaged hardware and software will be related to the public cloud in 2015.
  • Software as a service will represent three quarters of all spending on public cloud services. SaaS will also drive server and storage cloud spending.
  • The U.S. will represent 50 percent of all public cloud services spending in 2015, but other region such as Asia Pacific and Western Europe will also ramp spending.

Good stuff - love to know the breakdown of when sectors will be adopting: enterprise, mid-size, smb. Aside from the normal SaaS service (e.g. Salesforce and the like), it would seem the smaller companies may lag in migrating to a cloud model.

  • Zzzzz

Another useless prediction. Weren't these the same jokers who predicted booming netbook sales in 2009, 2010, ... ?

  • What to do with the old hardware

Interesting data. We look forward to helping the cloud adopters with all the retired assets. We turn them into dollars!

Yes. Cloud will grow. No question. However, security is a big concern and there will be bumps along the way. Companies and consumers will put their mission critical and personal data on servers. Hackers and identity thieves will attack.

OK, IDC proves that they can make crazy predictions.

There are few issues such as: bandwidth caps, net neutrality, security, trust, SLAs, auditability, safe harbors, indeminification, legacy software and profitability of cloud models. There is also the core issue of defining what is meant by "cloud".

The cloud is still beta. Completely unsecure and run by developers instead of security experts. Someone's working with IDC and Gartner to push the cloud without getting all the pieces in place first.

  • Trust the Cloud?

Not only is security an issue, maintaining 100% access can also be a concern and direct access to your data for other operations can be difficult or not allowed. Work crews cut through a fiber optic cable and took out our WAN for 3 days. System integration involving multiple apps and venders is very difficult. And data-mining can be impossible. If not in a major centre the required band width requirements are costly.

Those who have expressed concerns about the security of the cloud are right on the money. This is why we created Jumpto. With Jumpto, the cloud, it's members, devices and data cannot be resolved by anyone on the public internet. For all intents and purposes a Jumpto created cloud is invisible to anyone but the authorized members. Check out http://www.jumpto.com and download the beta software. Let me know what you think.

This is good stuff to know...is there any such prediction on the Private CLoud Numbers?
Also, is there any breakdown in Regions/Technology available?

Cloud should remedy the security and privacy issues. Any one would always be skeptical about any privacy issues may it be personal or not like Ontario divorce and Child Support Guidelines. Security is also important because no one likes to get hacked and have their personal identity stolen similar to those victims of online theft.
