Intel acquires Cray HPC interconnect technology

Intel has acquired Cray's high-performance computing interconnect program in a move to bolster its team and intellectual property.

According to the chip giant, the Cray intellectual property and personnel will help it "achieve ExaFlops performance."

The deal is expected to close by the end of June.

Intel's plan is to take Cray's interconnect team behind two technologies dubbed Aries and Gemini. The interconnect technologies are designed to work on Cray's next-gen supercomputer called Cascade, which will use Intel Xeon processors.

Gemini is an interconnect capable of tens of millions of messages per second and designed for multicore processors. Aries will be part of the Cascade system to be used in Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (DARPA) HPC program.

The Aries interconnect chipset allows the system to scale along with network bandwidth.
