Intel, Nokia launch mobile 3D lab

By | August 24, 2010, 5:11am PDT

Intel and Nokia, partners on the MeeGo open source operating system, have launched a research lab to focus on mobile 3D.

The effort, which was announced Tuesday, will have about 24 researchers. The University of Oulu is also a partner in the lab.

According to the companies, Intel and Nokia will focus on 3D interfaces for mobile devices. All of the research findings will be open source. The aim here is pretty straightforward: Nokia wants mobile intellectual property and Intel’s processors are increasingly targeting smaller devices.

One of the possibilities to research would be holograms. In the future, your phone may project a 3D hologram of the person you’re talking to.
