Intel said in a statement its 5400 Series of chips--X5492, X5470 and L5430--has a low voltage version that uses 12.5 watts per core for a total of 50 watts of power. The top speed for this series is 3.4 GHz. The dual core X5370 consumes 80 watts of power with frequencies of 3.5 GHz. The X5492, however, is powerful but consumes 150 watts.
Most server vendors--Dell, HP, IBM, NEC, Rackable, Sun and others--are supporting Intel's new Xeon chips, which run between $562 to $1,493.
