Intuit's online services affected by widespread outages

By | June 16, 2010, 11:03am PDT

Summary: Intuit said that an outage has affected online services such as Quicken, Quickbooks and Turbo Tax but that service is starting to be restored.

Intuit said today that it is experiencing outages on a number of its online services, including Quicken, Quickbooks and Turbo Tax. The outages began sometime Tuesday night.

A company spokesperson said the outages appeared to be related to a maintenance issue but that the company was working on restoring service. Turbo Tax service was starting to be restored already.

The outage did not compromise any data, the company said. We’ll update this post when all services are fully restored.

We’ve received numerous email reports from ZDNet readers trying to figure out what was going on. Based on the emails, the outages have been going on for at least 12 hours.

As a customer I will soon cancel their services! This is exactly why "the cloud" is both bad for customers and business.

I believe the problem is their new R7 security patch update - I had issues with it yesterday at a client's, but was able to finally resolve, after losing almost 2 hours of business time. And now today, while installing the R7 patch at another client's, the system froze at 35% complete, crashed this computer, and after re-starting, Quikbooks will not even open. This security feature - put in place to protect customer credit card info stored in Quikbooks, is completely annoying btw - it says that only the administrator has to have a complex password after installing, but yesterday's experience (5 users - Enterprise) - left us with every single user having to create a complex password (7 characters, one capital, one number - blah, blah blah) which MUST BE CHANGED EVERY 90 DAYS!!! Intuit - a company supposedly focused on making business easier, and yet constantly creating roadblock after roadblock...And now this. I am on the clock, with nothing to do - but hand-write checks. Ludicrous...

We run a small bookkeeping service and we have been unable to do any work for our clients today. Is there a way to bill Intuit for the loose of work during business hours today? If so, please send us the address to send the bill to.

I find it totally unacceptable that QuickBooks Online and QuickBase have been unavailable for over 17 hours and that Intuit did not have any business continuity plan in place that would have lessened the impact of this outage. Our inability to access these critical online business services has severely impacted our company operations. Shame on you Intuit sad

It's NOT only Quickbooks online... you CANNOT process and Credit Cards in desktop versions of QB, cannot send emails through their service, which means you cannot send out invoices, purchase orders or even charge credit cards from customers... the Quickbooks world is down. not a good thing.

A quick work around for emailing Invoices and other documents out of QuickBooks is to save a PDF to your desktop (or somewhere convenient) and attach the file to your email ? Please do not try (at this time) to email directly from QuickBooks.

This is a bad thing in terms of a single point of failure. A workaround for local (non-Internet based) systems is to File-->Save As PDF and use your standard email client software to send an attachment.

I can't process my payroll which needs to be done by 5pm today for those employees who get direct deposit (to say nothing of the checks that have to get in the mail). For this "great" service, they had the gall to increase their monthly charge from $10.95 to $30/month this month. Guess we are paying for all the consultants they have their trying to fix their problems. Time to find another provider.

How can Intuit have ALL of their properties in 1 Data Center? Your CTO needs to pack his/her bags after this. Where?s the redundancy we were promised? Millions of dollars are being lost through lost sales and operating expenses because of this. How can one of the top online companies in the world let something like this happen? Get ready Tech schools as you?re about to have a case study in business continuity planning for IT Administrators.

I see everyone is venting. I was just checking again...I need to print a copy of my taxes to give to the mortgage company so I can close on my house...It is now after 5 est and they are closed and I still can't get in. Wonder if Intuit will pay my closing costs if the rate changes?

Bad sign... their QuickBase support status web site is no longer being updated every 30 minutes. They've changed it to every 60 minutes. Further indication that they have no idea when they might be able to get things running again.
