Yesterday's news that Microsoft has agreed to pay Novell $536 million dollars in order to dispatch another resource-sapping lawsuit raises the cost of the Redmond-based company's legal house-cleaning over the last 11 months to at least $3.77 billion. With so many settlements over such a short period of time for such large sums of money, I couldn't help but wonder if the company isn't also looking to free its lawyers from their defensive obligations for a little work on the offensive front.
