Mark Zuckerberg discusses Silicon Valley 'war' with Charlie Rose

By | November 7, 2011, 3:08pm PST

Summary: PBS’ Charlie Rose recently sat down with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and COO Sheryl Sandberg to discuss a broad range of hot topics.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and COO Sheryl Sandberg recently opened up to PBS broadcast journalist Charlie Rose in a candid interview that is set to air tonight.

Conducted last Thursday at Facebook headquarters in Palo Alto, the discussion covers a huge swath of topics, including the company’s mission, competition with Google, China, the Arab spring, the goals of an IPO, the privacy debate, the lack of engineering talent in the U.S and more.

The interview definitely reveals quite a bit about how Zuckerberg views Facebook allies, enemies and frenemies in Silicon Valley. When asked by Rose about a “flat-out war” for the future of the Valley among the top four companies of the moment (Facebook, Google, Amazon and Apple), it’s easy to see where the battle lines have been drawn:

Zuckerberg: Yes, and no. I mean, I think, you know, Google, I think, in some ways, is more competitive and certainly is trying to build their own little version of Facebook. But you know, when I look at Amazon and Apple and I see companies who are extremely aligned with us, right. And we have a lot of conversations with people at both companies just trying to figure out ways that we can do more together, and there is just a lot of reception there. I mean, I can’t think of an Apple product or an Amazon product that I look at and it’s like, oh, that’s really –

Rose: Yeah, but come on. Look at it. Apple just — Amazon just announced a new Kindle Fire, which is –

Zuckerberg: I know, and they’re tablet –

Charlie Rose:
– could deeply compete with the iPad.

Zuckerberg: And that’s cool. I mean, we don’t have tablets, though, so we could care less about that.

The full interview will be broadcast on Charlie Rose at midnight on Tuesday, November 8 (but be sure to check local listings in case this varies by area), but here’s an excerpt of the interview for now:

No, not interested. Mark can go away, he's not doing any good for Facebook.

And they're not doing the social thing very well at all. It took Google+ to show them how to do it right.

They claim to do one thing and do one thing well - but they can't do that one thing very well at all. They get major backlash every time they try to change stuff, and I can't remember the last time anybody actually thought their changes were an improvement.

And why is the interviewer sitting there with an opened shirt and messed up hair while wearing a suit? Not very professional. Geeze, button up that shirt, comb the hair. Or wear a T-shirt and jeans if you really want the casual look.

I can't speak to Charlie's attire but he has an interview on every weekday on PBS and has been at this for many years (I have a season pass for his show on my TiVo) See http://www.charlierose.com/about/biography/ and http://www.charlierose.com/about/show/. He interviews a lot of notable people in from famous actors and directors to musicians to tech executives to world leaders.

Apparently, the show's been on since 91 and began on PBS in 92.
