Word of Microsoft's big announcement in about an hour is out. The news: Microsoft is pledging not to sue open source companies over products that connect to its software.

Ina Fried reported the news, but color me skeptical. Is this a Microsoft peace offering that could actually annoy the open source community? After all, the open source community never bought into the idea that Microsoft could and should sue them.

The company has inked deal with Novell and others, but it's going to be interesting to see how this goes over. Stay tuned.

  • My guess, the devil is in the details.

Of course you may connect to our code, as long as you do not violate any patents or copyrights and accept our license terms.

    Should be interesting...

You should be skeptical, because this is clearly not what Microsoft announced. They said they wouldn't sue developers but commercial open-source entities are another ball of wax. They still have to license the software.

  • Software companies will spend over 30% of their time and money

just trying to keep their products connecting to MS products. Our company spends
that much time each year just keeping our stuff running as they constantly change
things and disable things due to security reasons. After all, it's all about keeping their
customers safe from, uh, third party developers? If they were interested in security
they would GET RID OF ACTIVE-X. Come on people.

  • For what a "pledge" is worth..........

Not even 2 cents, to me, coming from
    microsoft!

Anybody ever read any history? Or was
everybody born last night? Or did
they just fall off a turnip truck?
