Microsoft planning major overhauls for MSN and Microsoft.com

By | March 17, 2011, 4:41am PDT

Summary: Microsoft has hired quite a number of designers to create ideas for the next generation of MSN and Microsoft.com. Catch a sneak peek of their ideas here!

New MSN Logo?

New MSN Logo?

Doing some investigative research via Google and digging around the portfolios of designers, I’ve stumbled upon a number of design ideas and mock-ups for various Microsoft Web properties; namely, MSN and Microsoft’s main Web site, microsoft.com.

Included are ideas for a re-branded MSN logo (pictured on the right and down below), a redesigned MSN Life and Style, a refreshed MSN Video site (it closely resembles the current MSN Video site, but the differences are easily spotted), a new approach to navigation in MSN via “auras,” and a Silverlight-based microsoft.com.

Important to note is that while these designers were hired by Microsoft to design these ideas, there are certainly plenty of others they hired to do the same task, so what you see in this post may very well not represent the final ideas they choose to go with if/when they do decide to go through with MSN and/or Microsoft.com overhauls. With that said, below are all the images I’ve dug up so far. Click them to see higher-resolution versions. Lastly, I’ve provided source links to the origin of the images so that you can verify for yourself the validity of the images in addition to the descriptions accompanying them.

Conclusion

As you can see, there are some drastic differences in some of these designs. Again, which ones — if any — Microsoft decides to implement is anyone’s guess at this point. Personally, I think the logo design is pretty spiffy and I like the idea of MSN Auras. Overall, some good ideas but I’m not sure how well they would all work in real-world usage. What are your thoughts? Do you like any of these designs? Would you even use MSN at this point if it had a new look and feel to it?

I totally agree. They do need to change more things than just the logo. Long way to go for msn getting a "lifestyle" like they want to. When looking at our guest at Hotel Tirol using a platform online there are not too many on msn.com

... and other MS web site (redesigned, very slick) properties, be available in the form of local apps for GUIs and touch interfaces. Then apply a freemium model to them to better monetize them; then use MS' current web sites and other means, to drive users to the apps. MS can make billions of dollars this way from its online properties, over what it is doing now. Apps = profits. MS web sites (by themselves) = losses. After over 15 years, it is time to try something significantly different.

They are friendlier logos and that is fine.
I used to use MSN a lot, but when they tied messenger directly to it, along with windows live, I was unwilling to jump through all the hoops just to get a home page up. Seem like every other time I logged in I got a message that took precedence over my log-in. I switched home pages for the first time ever

All look pretty bad to me. What happened to a simplistic look that wasnt rainbows and butterflies. Just not something that would draw me as a 35 year old man to it. Looks good for kids under 12 and women i guess.

I have MSN as my homepage. My beef with them is that half the links are broken and kick you back to the home page, my other problem is I don't think they work on weekends. Because the homepage doesn't change much from Friday to Sunday.
It is time to change. I agree with some of the MSN home page.

Nothing I see here to make me change from my.yahoo.com homepage that I have set up EXACTLY like I want it. Totally customized, not the stupid crap I see when I log out of my hotmail account and am forced to the MSN homepage.
