I have tried to use OpenOffice repeatedly, and it's still not up-to-par with MS Office, but it's free, highly usable and continues to get better. Increasingly, Microsoft will have a more difficult time competing against OpenOffice and the commercial StarOffice version of the open source productivity suite.
