Microsoft's Xbox 360 tops console competitors in May

By | June 14, 2011, 8:14am PDT

Summary: Microsoft’s Xbox 360 continued its reign at the top of the list for bestselling gaming consoles, with an ever-so-slight increase in sales.

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 continued its reign at the top of the list for bestselling gaming consoles, with an ever-so-slight increase in sales.

That would be a one percent increase, which isn’t much but it could be construed that way when the competitors saw only a decrease.

Microsoft affirmed ahead of E3 2011 earlier this month that an estimated 55 million Xbox 360 units had been sold since the gadget was first introduced in 2005.

And fortunately for Microsoft, the sales keep coming. NPD Group estimates that approximately 270,000 Xbox 360 units were sold during the month of May, bringing the console’s lead streak to a total of five months running. That also makes the Xbox 360 the most sold console for the last 11 out of 12 months.

It’s likely that Xbox will stay on top for months to come. Microsoft is the only gaming brand to release an updated console of sorts. Sure, the Kinect isn’t a standalone console and the Xbox 360 isn’t new itself, but together they bring a whole new package to the table.

We likely won’t see much of an upheaval in this arena until the Nintendo Wii U hits shelves next year, and maybe if we see a Sony PlayStation 4 in the next two years. (After all, Sony hasn’t helped itself much year with all the PlayStation news as of late.)

US minded?

Consoles are not only sold in the US.
Outside the US the Xbox is not the leading console.

Xbox 360 - Play in our world, live in... er Jump in! wink
Is anyone even surprised consoles aren't selling? We're in that phase where everybody is awaiting the next generation.
@Aerowind

Agreed. Consoles are ancient now. Thanks for leaving PC gamers in the dust too. Kinda crappy still having Dx 9.0 console ports. sad
@Cylon Centurion

Companies aren't willing to commit to PC gaming anymore because they are sick of getting ripped off with all the piracy....
@Aerowind
They will be waiting a long time....neither Sony nor Microsoft has plans to release a new console earlier than 2015......when the X Box 360 and the Playstation 3 were released we were specifically told by both companies that they intend these devices to be 'the' console for 10 years....

The truth is that gaming technology has gotten to the point where hardware improvements are virtually meaningless, graphics are as good as they are ever going to get, and increasing the number of 'bits' or processor speed will have little meaningful impact on gameplay.
I love it. So James did not write anything about this? James must be mad because microsoft xbox is blowing away apple games oops! what games does apple have hahahaha
