Mobile Internet usage to crowd out wireline by 2015

By | September 12, 2011, 8:16am PDT

Summary: In 2015, the Internet will mostly be accessed via mobile devices.

Mobile Internet usage is on pace to surge past traditional PC and wireline access as smartphones and tablet sales swell, according to a report by IDC.

According to IDC, the number of people accessing the Internet via a PC will stagnate and then decline starting in 2015. The data is likely to be used as another data point in the post-PC era argument.

IDC predicted that tablet and smartphone sales will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 16.6 percent a year. The big inflection point is when smartphones outpace feature phones.

As sales of these mobile devices surge, wired usage will fall. IDC is predicting that the global number of Internet users will be 2.7 billion in 2015, up from 2 billion in 2010.
