MobileMe can only be "new and improved" if Apple kills subscription fee

Summary: For as many headlines as Apple generates, there aren't too many that center around the company's subscription cloud offering, called Mobile Me. Suddenly, though, in the days ahead of a March 2 Apple news event, there's a flurry of online posts suggesting that a revamp of MobileMe may be on the lineup of announcements that day.

For as many headlines as Apple generates, there aren't too many that center around the company's subscription cloud offering, called Mobile Me. Suddenly, though, in the days ahead of a March 2 Apple news event, there's a flurry of online posts suggesting that a revamp of MobileMe may be on the lineup of announcements that day.

The AppleInsider blog is reporting that Apple has removed the Mobileme product from its online stores and told resellers that it has discontinued the box version, tagging it as "End of Life" product. That has led some to believe Apple is getting ready for a major upgrade sooner rather than later. And some sources told the blog that CEO Steve Jobs, who is on medical leave, is still very hands-on when it comes to the new iPhones and MobileMe.

The first order of business should be to dump the paid subscription and start offering it for free, giving users an opportunity to sync their data with Apple's other products and devices.

That's one of the biggest downfalls of MobileMe, Why should users have to pay $99 per year to sync things like my e-mail, calendar and contacts when my Gmail and Yahoo mail accounts are already offering those services at no charge - and building versions for mobile devices so that users can access their information from any device or location?

Likewise, I can't see paying Apple so that I can share my photos when sites like Flikr, Picasa and even Facebook are giving users a way to do that for free. The same goes for music, which is being streamed over Pandora or even synced with an iTunes folder via Mspot.

And, as for file storage, companies like DropBox and SugarSync are finding ways for consumers to store, access and share personal files of all types via the cloud - with a small amount of storage being offered for free and larger capacities being offered for a premium.

It seems almost funny to think that Apple would start giving away online storage. After all, when it comes to storage, that's how Apple tiers its products for pricing. Just look at items like the iPhone and iPad, which are sold according to the amount of capacity they offer. And, of course, there are no slots for inserting SD cards on those devices, either.

After all, why would anyone buy a 64 GB device when you could pick up the same device with only 32 GB - at a significant savings - and then slip some SD cards it in to expand the amount of space in it?

Earlier this month, the Wall Street Journal reported that Apple was considering dumping the paid subscription model and offering online storage for free, a move that would be a good start at winning over new subscribers even if it will be a tough sell for those existing customers who already have their lives in the clouds set-up elsewhere.

The Journal also reported that MobileMe could become a "focal point" for a new online music service that Apple has had in development for more than a year. Not that we haven't been hearing buzz about Apple's online music offering for some time already.

  • if millions of apple customers pay for it...

...why should they give it for free? there are a lots of other services and geeks surely have no problems to navigate all those offerings. normal people see a value in deep integration and easy setup though. something geeks will never understand, but apple does. that's why they are now the second most valuable company on this planet and that's why they give a rat's a** about advices from clueless pundits.

the moment apple starts to listen to the blogosphere i will sell my shares.

      @banned from zdnet
although I don't like Apple and don't own and don't intend ever to own any of their products, your comment is well on the spot! It's their business model and I just can't see why so many people nag about their charging $ for everything. It worked so far, it works still, and I bet you it will work for them for many years to come.
It just don't work for me, so not a fan. Still, you're right.

Obviously their business model is wrong and sure its their right to be idiots about their business, but as the article states people aren't using the service since there are free services that do a better job than their paid version. With Google and Hotmail you can access it using activesync which is by far the best and most robust push technology out there and is why Google licensed it for their products and not just Microsoft. I will once again ask why a company with what $50+ billion in the bank would really care to charge for this service. I mean what kind of revenue does this give Apple and from my perspective I would guess its more like a rounding error on the balance sheet. Correct me if I am wrong, but thats not the way to win business if you are trying to attract people to it or maybe I am just dumb and Apple has all the correct answers and no one should question anything they do?

      • Once again

        @OhTheHumanity

There are no FREE services. All these services, form every provider, are businesses. They must be run at some profit, either directly though user fees (Apple, etc.), or indirectly through advertising revenue (Google, Yahoo, etc.) or capturing secondary sales somehow (Microsoft and its Office products). Apple has chosen a model of user fees and absolutely zero advertising, a premium price for a premium service. In return for my money, I expect them to be discrete with the information they have access to. Certainly, they offer services no other provides like "find my phone" and "remote wipe" that I would never EVER trust to the likes of Google or Yahoo. It's certainly not everyone's cup of tea, but those of us who are paying for this probably appreciate it.

P.S. The other thing is that although it may not be expensive, now, for Apple to offer these services free. Apple's making a lot of money and the costs seem relatively small, but it would still cost. As it is now it is not popular but those who buy it have a reason to use it. If it became very popular, as it would if it were "free" because everyone would sign up for something that is free even if they really had no intention of ever using it, eventually Apple would be forced to pare it back or monetize it.

  • I've never had a problem with the $99

It was worth it to me to not be pimped out to advertisers. Gmail, Flickr, and Facebook may be alternatives, if you understand that whatever you put out there will be harvested for demographic info. I'm willing to pay $8.50 a month to avoid that.

    • Well said

@matthew_maurice ... no matter what any company says, if they're doing something that they give away for free, corporate politics dictate that the division will be under pressure, which will be relieved only by not doing maintenance and new updates and new features, or by pimping users out to advertisers.

I want to be protected from advertisers. I want to be on a service which isn't free, and therefore has fewer Nigerian scammers and so on. I want to be in a service that is willing to spend resources keeping up and improving.

True and the reason I originally subscribed.
But... I have a number of different email accounts for various purposes and have found that Me and others (especially gmail) don't play well together. Every time I see a Mobile Me update I cringe as 4 times out of 5 my Mobile Me contacts get messed up (multiple duplications of the same contact).
And as usual, Apple help only goes so far.
At least with gmail and Outlook I don't have these issues.
If they provide it for free I will keep else it dies in a couple of months.
      :(

      • I don't believe you zenwalker... And Sam, you are clueless

        @zenwalker

I have had moble me/mac.com and Gmail for 5+ years now and have never had a single problem... I also have Outlook/Entourage and Exchange and Yahoo mail... No problems. And I have never heard of a problem like yours from any friends, family, co-workers, etc. Sounds like a PEBKAC issue. Computer tend to do exactly what we tell them to do.

And Sam Diaz.. Grow a friggin brain dude... You are totally clueless about Moble Me... Email, syncing, web hosting, syncing multiple devices, online storage... And guess what brainiac, Apple does charge more for additional online storage doofus. You just proved how clueless you are.

And Yeah you can sell your soul for something more complicated and far more hassle in exchange for free service, or you can go with easy, private, and powerful for $99 a year. Yes we get it, you are the type to fix your own car and do your own plumbing and then have to pay a mechanic or plumber to come in and fix your failure. And you are clueless and too cheap to care about letting others pimp your identity/privacy. But there is real value in quality, easy, and safe. My time is worth more to me than saving a few cents here and there. I'm either working or playing and enjoying life. And I make enough to afford a few conveniences.

But I suspect this may has something to do with Apple's new Data Center and not wanting to add users when they are ramping up for a migration and may be changing some of the offerings...

Yes Sam, Apple topics are click bait and you get paid for writing about them... But stick to the things you kinda have a clue about.

So with the next MMe update and my contact list goes berserk I can give you a call?
For the issue being the user - get real. The update has no user interaction - it is all automatic.
        I have Exchange / Gmail / MME / Hotmail.
The issue appears to be that after an MMe update, it reads the contacts from my other email accounts and instead of grouping or screening out duplicate contacts it creates a duplicate entry. So if I have John Smith at 555-1234 in gmail and hotmail and exchange, in MMe I get three John Smith contact entries.

If you know of a solution I would appreciate it.

And next time - don't jump out with the insults - it makes you look immature.

  • These alternate services are NOT free

Get that through your head. Someone is picking up the tab and that someone is advertisers. YOU are paying with your personal information and the uncertainty that the terms of these services can change at any time, and they DO change and not always for the better.

  • RE: MobileMe can only be

Google syncing is almost un-useable, having used both itools / .Mac / MobileMe and Google Mail/Apps/Calendar/Sync
since their introduction - I can easily say the only thing good about Google's syncing and products are they are free and shareable.
The interface is worse than bad you must think like google to even understand what they are trying to offer, and trying to sync anything but simple stuff does not work well.
If Apple gives MobileMe functionality for free with iOS and OSX and extends wireless syncing to music then it will be way ahead of anything from Google.

Oh I don't know, maybe because they don't want all of their data mined for advertising? Or better yet, their friends info mined for profiling? NOBODY GIVES THIS STUFF FOR FREE!!!!!!!!

    >> After all, why would anyone buy a 64 GB device when you could pick up the same device with only 32 GB - at a significant savings<<
Here again, because it is vastly more convenient to have all of your data available all the time. Ask Android users about what can and can't be on external media.

  • RE: MobileMe can only be

What if Apple included 3G data service as a component of MobileMe? They could bulk-purchase service from multiple carriers, integrate FaceTime calling, server WEBDAV functionality on you home computer (a component of Lion), merger of mobile and desktop apps (app store(s), full-screen, multi-touch mouse) and they would have a real, integrated cloud solution.

And that, would be worth paying for...

Should it follow ZNET can only be "new and improved" if it cuts all salaries to editors?

    • RE: MobileMe can only be

@Bob Forsberg Simple question. Is it OK for Apple only to be improved if its free, but ZDNET can charge money for things?
      Bob Forsberg
  • ZDNET to cut all payment of salaries to Editors

As Apple offers its new and improved MobileMe for free, its been reported ZDNET will follow by discontinuing salaries to its employees and editors.

  • RE: MobileMe can only be

I disagree on the free idea...

However, how about offer different levels of MobileMe membership.

Make it $99 for the main package
Then give us a $39 a year package that just syncs addresses, calendar and lets you share photos. I never use iDisk (to slow) and I already have a domain that I use for email, so I really don't need the .me address.

Or... Make it a build your own package..
    9.99 a year per feature
    Sync addresses
    Sync calendar
    host pictures
    Email
    idisk
    Webspace
    Back to my mac
    Etc etc
