Motorola: Droid sales are going "extremely well"

By | June 10, 2010, 12:46pm PDT

Summary: Motorola says demand for the original Droid is still strong but facing some component shortages and that the company will release new phones with front cameras for video conferencing - even though the company’s co-CEO is not a great believer in it.

It may seem that HTC is getting all of the Android love and attention these days, but Motorola’s co-CEO says the original Droid is doing “extremely well” on sales and that a shortage of screens is the only thing that’s keeping the company from making - and selling - more, according to a Reuters report.

Motorola’s Sanjay Jha told reporters in Chicago this week that the Motorola portfolio for 2010 would include two to four phones with front-facing cameras to accommodate mobile video conferencing features such as the one that Steve Jobs showcased on the new iPhone 4, which will be released later this month.

HTC’s Evo 4G for Sprint, which saw strong sales during its opening weekend, also has a front-facing camera.

Interestingly enough, Jha said he has “never been a great believer” in the demand for video conferencing but would support the technology in Motorola devices.

On a personal note, I agree with Jha about the video conferencing feature. Is there really a demand for this sort of face-to-face communications over a mobile device. Personally, I can’t imagine a scenario where I need to see the person on the other end of the conversation.

But that’s just me, I guess.

must look at big picture
ShazAmerica 10th Jun 2010
My dog was in intensive care with internal bleeding, didn't know if she would live or die. My wife was at home with our other dog that had just been operated on so she couldn't accompany me to the animal hospital

I brought my iPhone, crawled int my dogs kennel in intensive care, and used KnockVideo to stream what my phones camera was seeing to my wifes iPhone; a virtual bedside visit.

FaceTime will bu used for much more than chatting between two people. Remember, at least on the iPhone you can switch between front and rear camera.

Think outside the box, maybe a loved one is in an unfamiliar area, or feels threatened by someone and wants to send you a video of their situation. There are hundreds if things that will be shared live. Doesn't Appkes own ad show deaf people signing to each other?

@ShazAmerica No one said there wasn't a niche market. However, every time I see someone start Skype (which automatically tries video calls when a webcam is present) on their laptop they say, "ack, make the picture go away!" I have cleaned the language up a lot BTW. I have seen this repeatedly with both MacBook and other users. Frankly, your dog story is just weird. Sorry if that is a personal insult but seriously, it is weird. I am glad you love your dogs very much though. Still...

@Mabrick Unless they release numbers of how many they've sold - like Apple does for the iPhone - their claims of 'selling extremely well' are bullsh*t.

@Mabrick Just wait till the bills come in the mail from the video conf. Some iPhone-ATT users will be shocked if they do not have the 2 gig plan. Even then a heavy user will go over and pay dearly. As far as the Mo to Droid, it a fine little appliance for a technerd like me but lacks some of the sex appeal of others. I can see why it is selling well.

Good point! I have several times missed the possibility of two way video for various troubleshooting and repairing cases. E.g. I have a summer house which needs constant repair of electricity, water pump, etc., etc., the stuff I am not very qualified with. I have a brother who knows everything about repairing almost anything. It would be awesome to show. "This is how the wires look. Which of them I can touch without killing my self. And how do I repair this and that", etc.

Not sure what the hype is around video calling. Aren't calls on the downswing anyway as most use text more nowadays. I know I care less to have it, but may be a fun feature at first for many.

It really helps sales numbers
MacCanuck 10th Jun 2010
and PR when you have 2-for-1 sales offers.

>>> Motorola?s co-CEO says the original Droid is doing ?extremely well? on sales and that a shortage of screens is the only thing that?s keeping the company from making - and selling more... >>>

Last weekend's TV was inundated with Verizon 2-for-1 Motorola Droid offers, similar to previous deals in the last few months.

Motorola and Droid sales numbers will certainly be helped after T-Mobile's June 19 free phones (with contract) offer occurs.

Except for one tiny problem..

@MacCanuck
Isn't the Droid in Verizon's stable...? T-Mo can have all the fire sales it wants - but you can't get a free Droid from them if they don't have it to offer. Either way - it's the wrong technology. T-Mo is GSM while Verizon is CDMA..

sales numbers

"extremely well"? and yet they refuse to provide any sales numbers? hmmmh. what could that mean?

@banned from zdnet It means the numbers are posted by 3rd parties every quarter because the numbers come from the carrier and not the manufacturer...duh. Unlike the iPhone the original Droid has several different incarnations under different names in different markets. Motorola sells one base item and carriers then rebrand them for their own market.

Droid rocks!
dave@... 11th Jun 2010
Original Droid is a great smartphone, of course it's selling well. Sure, there is actual competition (translated: user choice) in the Android world vs, iPhone or, relatively, Blackberry... one size never fits all.

For me, the real keyboard is a big win. After owning the Droid since November, I'm faster on the physical keyboard then I was on my Treo or any touchscreen. And I get the full screen while typing.. more screen available than the new iPhone, even.

So many smartphone users get new device envy every month (Android) or in June (iPhone)... but I'm actually quite content with the Droid at this point.

Video Conferencing
ebhb2004@... 11th Jun 2010
Sam,
You may not see much need for video conferencing but when the cell phone first came out, did you see much need for people to be walking and driving with their ears glued to the phone. It's the old story, if it's built - they will use it

You may not see much need, but this feature is about about family and close friends. When you travel are you saying you wouldn't want to see your child or spouse when you say goodnight and have them see you. What about close friends that live some distance from one another?

I also think businesses will adopt and utilize this feature like they now do with Skype. It a few years people will wonder how they ever got along without it, kind of like what the iPhone did to smartphones.

I didn't know
n305er 11th Jun 2010
I honestly never know that most users never even experienced video calls before. It was all too common in Japan way before 3G (3G is based on their earlier network) and now a common service even in my country. In my country, we didn't need to rely on Wifi (Although it might be cheaper then 3G calls) and we often used Video calls.

It's especially useful when we are chatting with kids who responds better when they see you. And even more useful when we can show on going events to your friends. This is all done live, quick, and fun without the trouble of going through slowly typing out SMS or compiling MMS messages.

Actually, I was surprised of 2 things when iphone4 was announced .
1: Multitasking. (Sorry going off topic a little)
I almost chocked on my breakfast when I heard that iPhone is going to have multitasking. I thought It was so common that even some old fashion candy bar phones can do multitasking.

2: Video calls
When iPhone called their iPhone 3G... iPhone 3G, I thought they supported 3G! as in, all 3G features including video calls.

I used to drool over iPhones but never bought them since I could play with my friend's iPhones once in awhile... But now I only wonder why people think Apple's the one coming out with the new ideas when they are actually only copying existing ideas and applying some marketing techniques on them?

I can think of quite a few scenarios where people will love video conferencing, and frankly Jha not seeing that is not that surprizing to me. I think we will ultimately find moto having a difficult time navigating the Android market (pun intended) due to their leadership. I haven't heard a lot of good things from people with the new moto phones. quality is an issue, and side by side with other phones with similar processors, the Moto's pale in comparison.
