Motorola: Droid sales are going "extremely well"

Motorola says demand for the original Droid is still strong but facing some component shortages and that the company will release new phones with front cameras for video conferencing - even though the company's co-CEO is not a great believer in it.

It may seem that HTC is getting all of the Android love and attention these days, but Motorola's co-CEO says the original Droid is doing "extremely well" on sales and that a shortage of screens is the only thing that's keeping the company from making - and selling - more, according to a Reuters report.

Motorola's Sanjay Jha told reporters in Chicago this week that the Motorola portfolio for 2010 would include two to four phones with front-facing cameras to accommodate mobile video conferencing features such as the one that Steve Jobs showcased on the new iPhone 4, which will be released later this month.

HTC's Evo 4G for Sprint, which saw strong sales during its opening weekend, also has a front-facing camera.

Interestingly enough, Jha said he has "never been a great believer" in the demand for video conferencing but would support the technology in Motorola devices.

On a personal note, I agree with Jha about the video conferencing feature. Is there really a demand for this sort of face-to-face communications over a mobile device. Personally, I can't imagine a scenario where I need to see the person on the other end of the conversation.

But that's just me, I guess.
