My smartphone affair: Cheating on Verizon and Blackberry for a taste of Sprint and Pre

I’m going through a bit of a smartphone mid-life crisis - so I’ve quietly started a smartphone affair with Sprint and the Palm Pre.

You see, I’ve been using a Blackberry on Verizon Wireless for some time now and, in all honesty, I’m a bit burned out. Don’t get me wrong. The Blackberry is still an effective device at bringing together my work and personal e-mail, calendar, contacts and some useful apps, too. And I’ve had no problems with the Verizon service in my home, around the neighborhood and in my travels.

But, lately, I’ve been wondering if the grass is greener on the other side of the smartphone fence. I already know I love the iPhone but am not willing to become an AT&T customer. Windows Mobile just reminds me of Windows - and regular readers know that I’m no fan of Windows - so I don’t even bother looking at any of those devices.

A couple of months back, I spent 30 days playing with the free Android phone that was given to attendees at Google’s developer’s conference, along with 30 days of T-Mobile service. I liked the phone and the Android user interface and even was OK with T-Mobile’s service. But the pricing for T-Mobile seemed kind of high - plus I was still locked into my Verizon account.

But now, with less than 60 days left on my Verizon account, I’ve started lurking around mall kiosks and other places where more seductive smartphones can entice me into picking them up and taking them home. Over the weekend, I ducked into a Sprint store to look around. Next thing you know, I was walking out with a Pre.

Over the next 28 days or so, I’ll put the device - and the Sprint service - through some usage tests (and seeing how I use Google Voice, I don’t have to worry about the phone number issue.) and decide whether or not to keep it. At the end of the 30 days, I’ll post again with my decision of whether to keep it or return it.

You see, folks, I’m practicing what I’ve been preaching for some time now. I am taking advantage of the 30-day, no obligation return policy that the carriers have in place. If I decide in that time that I don’t like the device or the service, I simply return it for a full refund (even though I’m still on the hook for one month’s worth of service.) At the same time, I’m resisting the lure of a flashy phone by putting equal weight behind the quality of service by the carrier. That was my issue with the iPhone when I gave it a 30-day test run earlier this year - iPhone was great; AT&T sucked.

When the Pre came out last month, I ducked into a Sprint store to take a look. Of course, they were sold out - but I did learn a lot about pricing and found that I could probably save $120 or more on my monthly family plan bill by switching to Sprint.

Saving money is great but I’m more turned on by consistently reliable service. Truth be told: the iPhone, Pre and Android devices may be pretty to look at but if the service sucks, there’s no use switching.

Wouldn’t you agree?

Congrats on testing the waters

Be sure to check out precentral.net and their forums for realworld user experiences and solutions - as well as the homebrew apps. There is actually a homebrew app store now with 100 apps. But that site and others will definitely help if you run into any snags or want user reviews of accessories. Another ZDNet staffer wrote a piece about being unhappy because his phone shutoff randomly. It was a well known battery problem in some early models but he refused to return it for awhile. I thought that was pretty crazy.
Anyway, good luck. I went back to my Touch(winmobile) for a few days just to see if the Pre was worth it and I was totally miserable. The Pre isn't perfect but it does a lot of things well.
Hang on there with Verizon, they are rumored to get the Pre in January.
We're at http://verizon-pre.com/ can't wait too.

Why?

After more than 10 years with Verizon, I switched to Sprint and can't believe how bad Verizon was screwing my on my bills.

By the way, the Pre rocks!
Well, along with reliable rock-solid service, cheating on Verizon is better than cheating on a GF, because they don't care or get all upset about it. They even dumped me with a smile when I walked in to disconnect.

Ahh, greener grass is a terrible thing. Especially when it doesn't taste any better than the grass you were eating (or smoking) before.

I switched from Verizon to Sprint about 4 weeks ago and switched back a week later. I loved the Pre, but voice quality was noticeably worse throughout the Bay area (SF); not sure if it was the phone or the network.
Sprint is the best I've seen in the bay area. And the Pre isn't a bad device. It will grow on you, especially if you value multi-tasking.
I switched from Verizon to Sprint few months ago. Good decision i made. I've saved $ from my monthly bills on Sprint. Network/Reception is the same in the bay area. Voice quality is the same. Only difference is I pay less a month and have a cool phone.

personally I like AT&T
NoThomas 11th Aug 2009
I have used other services including Verizon and Sprint, and I have always come back to At&T. I like the service, even out in the middle of nowhere in West Texas I got great signal all bars compared to my friend on Verizon who got no bars. Maybe its just location thats bad for you, maybe where you live you have lousy cell towers or alot of interference.

Alas though after 3 years my cell phone has died on me and I just ordered a new phone which hopefully I will get today, I ordered the Samsung Eternity. I am not a smart phone person, I use the phone to call people, maybe text sometimes, and I use it as an address book. I just want a good dependable phone and the eternity has gotten good reviews.

I completely support this approach and encourage anyone thinking of switching carriers to try before you commit to 2 years. I tried Sprint and loved the Palm Pre, but the service was extremely poor for me where I live, work, and play so the choice to give it up was a no brainer. I enjoy using the iPhone too, but after switching my 5 lines to them a month ago I had to switch them all back to T-Mobile because dropped calls happened with just about every call on a number of different phone models.

It is all about which carrier works for you in your geographic area and in most cases we can't say this carrier or that carrier is the best. However, I still don't understand how all my phones could show a full signal and still suffer dropped calls with AT&T without their network being screwy.

Sprint ALMOST as good as Verizon
mypreindc 11th Aug 2009
I just switched from Verizon to Sprint a couple
months back for the Pre. Overall I am quite
pleased with the decision. Of course, the best
thing about Sprint's coverage is that it permits
voice and data roaming to Verizon (make sure you
turn on data roaming on your Pre - it is off by
default). Sprint's signals don't penetrate
buildings as well, but with roaming it is a moot
point.
