NetApp on Tuesday will update its OnCommand management software for storage admins and plug into most leading cloud management systems.

With the move, NetApp is allowing OnCommand plug into cloud management tools from BMC Software, CA, IBM's Tivoli, VMware, Microsoft's SystemCenter, Cisco's NewScale and VMware to name a few. The general idea for NetApp is to serve its storage admin customer base, but entrench itself with broader cloud management tools.

"We don't aim to win the single pane of glass war," said Chris Cummings, vice president of NetApp product and solution marketing. He added that storage admins are likely to use OnCommand as the rest of IT is managed through broader systems.

OnCommand's additions feature a new unified management screen, service analytics and third party SaaS support and orchestration. The company also integrated its Akorri acquisition into the OnCommand umbrella with a software called OnCommand Insight, which examines workloads and predicts whether the storage throughput can be handled. NetApp's SANscreen acquisition also falls under OnCommand as a resource management tool.

NetApp on Tuesday will also tout its partner programs including a series of vendors lined up for integrated "FlexPods." These preconfigured integrated data center racks are NetApp's shot to compete with larger vendors pitching on IT stack.

The FlexPod, which are used as prefab data center racks, now come in versions certified for SAP applications, Citrix XenDesktop and Microsoft specialized boxes.
