New Google accounts automatically register users for Gmail, Google+

New Google accounts automatically register users for Gmail, Google+

Summary: Google is showing just how committed it is to promoting its social networking platform.

SHARE:

It is fairly likely that if you're signing up for a new Google account these days, it is because you would like a Gmail account. Or perhaps you just want to keep track of favorite videos and subscriptions on YouTube.

For some of you, it might be because you want a Google+ account. Well, whether you want one or not, when you sign up for a new Google account these days, you're getting both a Gmail account and a Google+ profile automatically registered to you.

The Google Operating System blog has a rundown based on its own experiment with testing these new requirements, which have not been officially explained or revealed by Google itself.

Actually, this all makes perfect sense, and it is much easier for new users to have everything set up at once rather than having to separately sign up for Gmail and Google+ later. If you're not interested in Google+, no one is forcing you to make friends or create an elaborate profile.

It's also a win for Google as it tries to boost awareness and usage for its social networking platform that debuted last summer. Hype for Google+ has died down considerably over the last few months.

Yet interest in Gmail certainly hasn't. Yesterday during the company's quarterly call with investors, CEO Larry Page revealed that Gmail has more than 350 million active users as of the end of the fourth quarter of 2011.

UPDATE: Google actually started rolling this out quietly in November. Here's some further explanation from Google PR:

We're working to develop a consistent sign-up flow across our different products as part of our efforts to create an intuitive, beautifully simple, Google-wide user experience. Making it quick and easy to create a Google Account and a Google profile enables new users to take advantage of everything Google can offer.

Really? So the user doesn't have the option to NOT sign up for a Google+ account or GMail? Doesn't sound cool. If I only want a YouTube account, I don't want to be forced to set up, or not have the option to not accept, a GMail or Google+ account. This company.....

Latest Google earnings reports shows they are losing advertising revenues to Facebook. They are desperate to get more people hooked into GMail and Google+. All their earnings depend on their spyware.

@jorjitop: Sign up to Hotmail and you automatically get a Windows Live ID too. Giving you access to SkyDrive, Office Web Apps, MSN Messenger etc... This is no different and makes sense. You don't have to use the Gmail account and can set your Google+ profile to hidden and/or non-searchable.

I've not used my Google+ profile in months. Only a handful of my friends are on it and none use it regularly, if at all.

Really? Facebook earns in a year's income as much as google did in quaterly profit ! They should be scared at Mountain View!!

Seriously, Facebook didn't prove anything economically : they "seem" have as many users as google's service, but they don't succeed to convert them into cash. There is a good reason Facebook isn't listed the stock market : they don't want to show their finances.

I'm inclined to agree. I signed up for YouTube, NOT Gmail or Google+.

It makes sense from Google perspective though to combine all the login info and whatnot in to one giant account. Plus I am sure they will argue that it makes life easier on customers because they will have access to all Google's services. But it would be better from a user perspective to have an Opt-In page and the let you select the services that you want to use.

  • Wow what an act of desperation to artificially infate G+ numbers.

This is laughable. Next thing you know they'll be automatically creating a G+ account for every android activation. google you are EPIC LAME!

@jdakula: Nope. You need a Google account to access the Android Market but not to use an Android phone. You can skip it when it asks for a Google account during setup. You'd be really dumb too (so it backs up Contacts detail alone) but it's optional.

This is the same approach with Windows Phone working better with a Windows Live ID.

If you sign up for a Microsoft Live account you automatically have hotmail (even if you sign up with @yourdomain) skydrive, msoffice webapps, msn etc.

What's the difference? Seems logical to me.

    • G+ is like facebook.

@wendellgee@... The difference is that with microsoft, they dont create a facebook page for you--or a myspace page (remember them).

But I think a simple opt-out page is all google needs. It was silly the way the did it before where your youtube account was separate.

      • RE: New Google accounts automatically register users for Gmail, Google+

@otaddy: Er. yes they do. It's called Windows Live and has been there for years. No one uses it and it's more designed around pulling in other social networks but it has all the hallmarks of one of it's own.

No you don't get a hotmail account for your user account if you use your own email.

    There was hype for Google+?

  • What about Picasa etc.

Have they streamlined other Google "properties" like Picasa and Panoramio in, too?
So far they still seem to require separate logins, although Picasa albums are automatically Google+ photo albums - only sans the link to upload pictures from the album to Panoeamio :-(
